SA renovations near $1 million (2/9/05)

Project set in motion

By By Jack Ronald-

BERNE — Renovations at South Adams High School, which are expected to cost nearly $1 million, were set in motion Tuesday night.

South Adams School Board members unanimously agreed to have the Indianapolis architectural firm of Lamson and Condon proceed with developing design drawings for work in a number of areas of the school.

Among the areas targeted for work this summer are:

•The gymnasium floor.

•Locker rooms for both varsity athletics and physical education classes.

•Special education classrooms which need heating, ventilation and air conditioning work.

•Music classrooms.

•Student restrooms.

“Your physical education area, your locker rooms, they’re tired,” architect John Lamson told the board. “Your gymnasium floor needs help.”

Lamson has put an estimated price tag of $987,336 on the work and said he hopes that estimate is on the high side.

After design drawings are complete, a more detailed budget can be put together, he said. Construction drawings would then be developed and projects put out for bid. His tentative timetable calls for bids to be due by May 10, contracts awarded by May 16, and work to begin soon thereafter.

Lamson said a variety of options and alternates would be developed to allow the board to pick and choose which projects would actually go forward after firm prices are in hand.

The board was also unanimous in giving the green light to the Geneva Park Board to go ahead with a concession stand which will be constructed between two baseball diamonds on school corporation-owned land in Geneva.

Jason Wilkie of the park board presented school board members with a survey of the ballpark land and explained where the building will be constructed. The project, which will include new restrooms, will be paid for and maintained by the Geneva community.

South Adams Elementary School principal Jeff Rich presented a report to the board on reading and writing programs now under way at the school in efforts to boost literacy.

Those efforts include observing Book Week in February, a Young Authors Fair in April, participation in the Reading Rainbow program in conjunction with public libraries in Geneva and Berne, and programs for parents on building reading comprehension strategies.

“All of us know the first teacher is the mom and dad,” Rich said. “We know how important it is for parents to be involved.”[[In-content Ad]]
