Safeguard prescription medications (10/26/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Substance abuse continues to be a growing problem in our community and in recent years we have become more aware of individuals abusing prescription medications.

One of the obstacles to battling this issue is the misconception that because the medication is prescribed by a medical professional that it is safe. These medications are safe when used as prescribed for medical issues. However, they are not safe to be consumed by those who do not have a medical need or to be taken more than is prescribed.

Many individuals do not understand that by taking medication that is not prescribed or by taking more than the prescribed amount is dangerous and can be deadly.

Medications are created to treat illnesses, not to be used to get high. We have had far too many individuals die as a result of misusing medications in this community. In response, it is vital that all medications be kept in a secure place, taken only by those to whom it is prescribed, and taken only as prescribed.

Furthermore, we as a community need to limit the opportunity for our medications to be abused by others by properly disposing of them. It is not safe to flush them or to merely throw them in the trash. To properly dispose of unused medications, crush them and throw them in the trash or visit Tox-A-Way Day where they will be properly disposed of by professionals.

It is important that we as a community work to get dangerous medications off the streets. Obviously, some people will continue to need these medications and it will be important to safely store them away from children and visitors to their home.

Furthermore, it has become a recent trend for those seeking medications to steal them from the homes of unsuspecting individuals. Please take drug abuse seriously, educate yourselves, and do something about it.

Museum thanks

To the editor:

The board of directors of the Museum of the Soldier would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to the many people and organizations who came together to make our military vehicle show and BBQ Chicken Supper a huge success.

There are always too many great people to thank by name but for all those who helped sell tickets, set up and tear down before and after the event and those who worked at the event, thank you for your gift of time. A special thanks goes to Betty Williamson for chairing the supper and to Dr. Gene Gillum for many hours of work getting the museum ready. Thanks also to Miller Aviation, First Merchants Bank, Mike's Rent-All, Farm Bureau Insurance, Tri State Tractor Association, and True-Value Hardware for their support.

We had great local attendance but had guests from Columbus, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Richmond, Muncie, Anderson, Coldwater, Ohio, Celina, Ohio, and Marion, as well.

A special thanks to all those who brought their historic military vehicles to the show and shared their time and talents with the many visitors.

The Museum of the Soldier is dedicated to providing a showcase to honor and recognize the military service of our country's men and women and we are very grateful for the support that our community provides to assist us in fulfilling this mission.

Thank you,

Jim Waechter, for
