Safety should be top priority (12/14/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I am a mother of two kids that attend Jay Schools. I think it stinks that everyone had two hour delays and then ended up closed, but not Jay County.

What is Jay County doing? Trying to show other counties that we don't let bad weather stop us? We want to see if we can kill and hurt as many students as we can?

I tried to get my two girls to stay home, but they wouldn't because they don't want to get their mom and dad in trouble. But I don't care. I would rather have the school on my butt than hurt or dead kids.

I say all parents should take a stand. If the school doesn't want to protect our kids, then we should step in and keep our kids at home where they will be safe.

I have family in Wells County, and I tell them their kids go to school in a smart county because Jay County doesn't care at all except for getting kids to school at all costs.

Our road is a sheet of ice, and we have a sharp curve for the bus driver to go around. One bus driver went off there. This one will too, sooner or later. Then you will be happy, right?

These bus drivers should take a stand also cause they have to drive in this nasty weather. They should stay parked when the roads are like this. Thanks for reading.

Kind act

To the editor:

An act of kindness should not go unnoticed. Friday, I was carefully going up the steps of the Portland Post Office. A lady noticed I was taking a little more effort than some, and waited to open the door for me. I thanked her.

I took care of postal needs at the window and when I turned around to leave, there was the same lady, waiting at the door. She walked out the door and down the steps with me, and then asked if I could make it to my car all right. I want to publicly thank her. Her act of kindness was greatly appreciated and will not be soon forgotten.
