Safety, street repair discussed

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

I am a concerned citizen of Portland. I had a meeting with one of our city officials over the jog in Floral Avenue. It is very dangerous. We discussed speeding on this street. School's out and we have a lot of children riding bikes and playing close to the streets.

We talked about lowered speed limits or more signs, such as children playing.

Before the construction on Boundary Pike, which is great, there was a lot of semi travel on those streets. There are highways for these trucks. They are just escaping Department of Transportation stops.

Another good one is county road 200 South. There is a very small sign, "No thru trucks." I guess the truck drivers can't read.

They need a large sign with a $300 or more fine if caught. They are mostly grain semis. We need this stopped.

About our roads: I was told that Floral and Elder would need to be refinished after the construction is over. But now I read in the paper that the roads at are up for repair are not these two. They are Water, Morton, Wayne, Charles and High streets.

I don't think there is large truck traffic on these. Maybe Water. I guess it didn't matter if we care. I guess we will survive.

On a related matter, I sure am glad for the improvement to our drainage and sewage lines that are many years overdue.

Hope our taxpayers can afford this, and I hope the city can afford to resurface Floral Avenue, Chicago Avenue and Elder Street.

Who has to pay for this repair? The taxpayers?

God bless our city and the taxpayers.

Thank you,

Richard Haffner
