Sanders tosses hat in ring for mayor (12/16/06)
By By MIKE SNYDER-
Jim Sanders, a member of the Portland City Council for about a year and a half, announced Friday he plans to run for mayor next year.
Sanders, 61, a veteran worker for the U.S. Postal Service who was appointed to the council in the summer of 2005, will seek the Democratic nomination in the May 2007 primary election.
Filing for the primary elections in Portland, Dunkirk and Redkey begins Wed-nesday, Jan. 24, while the filing period for minor party races in Salamonia, Bryant and Pennville opens Tuesday, Jan. 2 and continues through August.
"I think downtown needs more help. Surely there's a way we can help ... more," Sanders, a resident of 120 Canterbury Lane, said Friday.
Sanders, who also has served as an appointed member of the Portland Planning Commission, was appointed to the council in August 2005 to fill the at-large seat on the council formerly held by Linda Kennedy.
Kennedy resigned from the council when she was selected as the city's clerk-treasurer following the death of then-clerk Barbara Blackford in July 2005.
Sanders said he doesn't have specific problems with the job done by current Mayor Bruce Hosier, who is widely expected to seek re-election to a second term.
"It's about what I think I can do in the future, not what's been done in the past. I have nothing against Bruce or the way things have been handled. I think I can handle them better in the future," Sanders said.
Sanders, who retired from the Postal Service after 20 years, had previously worked for 19 years at Portland Forge. He is a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and the Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, he also is a member of American Legion Post 211, Portland.
He and wife Penny have three children and nine grandchildren.
Here is a look at offices which will be on the ballot for the 2007 Election:
Portland and Dunkirk - Mayor, clerk-treasurer, city council, city court judge.
Pennville - Clerk-treasurer, 2 town board seats.
Redkey, Salamonia and Bryant - Clerk-treasurer, 3 town board seats.[[In-content Ad]]
