SA's Sprunger keys comeback for Bluffton (04/26/08)

Collegiate Check-up

Another shutout effort Tuesday gave Tyler Sprunger his second victory of the year.

Sprunger, a 2004 South Adams High School graduate, tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing the Bluffton University baseball team to rally for a 10-9 victory.

The Beavers trailed 8-2 when Sprunger came to the mound with one out in the fifth inning, but he immediately shut down host Defiance. He induced a pair of pop ups on the infield for the final two outs of the inning, and pitched three more scoreless as his team came back.

He gave up just three hits and a walk while striking out one before handing the ball over the Matt Perkins for the save.

Sprunger also pitched 1 1/3 innings April 19, giving up two runs - one earned - on two hits in a 13-6 loss to Franklin.

For the season, the senior leads Bluffton with a 2.65 ERA in 12 appearances. James Hausman is next at 3.03, and no other player on the team has a mark better than 5.00.

He is 2-1 on the year with one save and nine strikeouts in 17 innings.

Shatto came in to close out both games, striking out the only two hitters he faced in the opener. He sat down three more batters on strikes in 1 2/3 innings of work in game two.

The sophomore also had eight strikeouts Tuesday, but took the loss as the Chargers fell 7-2 to Kalamazoo Valley.
