Say yes to Supercenter

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

I just wanted to say that I agree with Paula’s letter in The Commercial Review on Saturday, June 26. I shop out of town for my groceries due to the fact that I spend the same amount of money that I would at LoBill but I come home with more and I even get brand name products. The selection of products is also better.

I want to the Super Wal-Mart in Muncie last night to get my groceries. While I was there, I recognized three other people from Portland getting their groceries. The aisles were big enough to fit three carts at one time down them so if someone wanted to stop and look at something they could without getting in someone else’s way.

After I left, I stopped at a gas station to fill my car with gas. I paid $1.74 a gallon. When I left Portland, gas was $1.84 a gallon. I don’t know of anyone that would not like to save money. Especially if you are on a fixed or budgeted income.

I am all for staying in Portland. There are times when I am tired or I don’t have the time to run out of town for something that I know Portland does not have. Such as the brand of dog food that my dogs eat.

As for the mom and pop stores here, I say give me an incentive to come shop with you. If you have been in business for any length of time, I am sure that you have your regulars. And if they choose to shop elsewhere to save money, then do something in order to get them to come back. I think Portland has had more than enough time to do what they want with the prices of things. We need competition. I am sure that out of towners will come shop with us. Which will help our community out.

As far as residents in the housing area that are living close to where the store is going to be located, yes it is going to be busy, but you chose to live in town. Town is a busy place.

I choose to live in the country where it is quiet. You go to any town and they are always upgrading. I just bet if you were able to walk a few hundred feet instead of getting in your car and driving, you would like it. I know I would. Granted, I will still go out of town some just to get away and see other sights.

As far as that intersection being busy, yes it is going to be busy. But if a stop light was installed, that would help. I have a teenager that drives and I would hope that he is a careful enough driver to drive through that area.

I don’t think that it is going to be any busier there than at the corner of Votaw and Meridian. There is always traffic there and not too many wrecks.

I know that not everyone is going to be happy. There are things in life that I don’t like either. Things change all the time and you don’t have a choice. You just have to accept it and go on.

So in closing I would say that I hope Super Wal-Mart decides to make Portland its new home.
