Schedule for WALK is set
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
In the next few weeks Jay County newspaper subscribers will find 2011 WALK Against Cancer information in their newspaper. This year we are celebration the 10th anniversary of the event.
It is our hope the community will join us on Saturday, June 25 at Jay County High School to raise money for the Jay County Cancer Society. The cancer society provides financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County for medical expenses, travel, prescriptions, testing, etc.
Activities start with a survivor dinner at 5:30 p.m. (reservations required by June 12); vendor area 7-9 p.m.; children’s carnival 7-9 p.m.; opening ceremonies with balloon launch at 8 p.m. and the luminary ceremony at 10 p.m.
The event will be held at the JCHS track rain or shine. We will not be moving the activities indoors in case of inclement weather, so bring a jacket and umbrella.
Bring your lawn chairs, too, as we will be sitting around the track on the grassy area this year also.
Fliers for the event are available at the Jay County Public Library, Jay County Hospital, Jay Community Center and many local businesses.
The flier is also available online at www.jaycountychamber.com. The flier will have the times for all events and a pledge sheet on the back. Any walker who collects more than $100 will receive a free WALK t-shirt while supplies last.
Thank you to our 2010 Gold Sponsors: Altar Rosary Society, Delta Theta Tau, Dr. Charles Miller, Dr. David Fullenkamp, Family Worship Center, Fellowship Baptist Church, Hartzell Fan, Inman U-Loc, Jay County Hospital, Knights of Columbus, MainSource Bank, Mayor Hosier’s 2011 Golf Outing, Remember When (the VanSkyock Family), S.D.P. Manufacturing, Stoneridge Electronics and Williams Auto Parts.
How can you help?
There are many ways. Collect money from your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, etc., as pledges or for luminaries, keep track on the pledge sheet, and bring the pledge sheet and money to the WALK. Ask your employer to make a donation on your behalf. Help spread the word by sharing this information with as many people as possible. Display the flier in your place of business. Have a charity fundraiser at your place of employment, church or philanthropic group and donate the funds raised to the WALK Against Cancer. The ways to help are endless and the difference every dollar makes is priceless.
Remember that 100 percent of the money donated to the Jay County Cancer Society remains in Jay County, helping our neighbors and friends with the uninsured cancer-related expenses.
In 2010 more than 80 Jay County cancer patients were helped financially.
If you would like to volunteer or need additional information, leave at message at (260) 726-8110.
Donations are accepted the night of the WALK or anytime at P.O. Box 614, Portland, IN, 47371.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, June 25, as we remember those lost, honor those who are suffering and celebrate with those who have won the fight against cancer.
