Schemenaur joins legislature race (01/26/08)
By By MIKE SNYDER-
A veteran educator who served several terms on the Jay County Council is making a run for state representative.
Andy Schemenaur Jr., a rural Portland resident who is principal at East Elementary School, filed Friday to seek the Democratic nomination for District 33 State Representative.
The seat is currently held by Bill Davis, a Republican from Portland who is in the second year of his second two-year term in the state legislature.
In other election news at the county level, a member of the Jay County Council decided to seek what is expected to be a vacant seat on Jay County Commissioners.
Jim Zimmerman, 6922 West 700 South, Redkey, filed mid-afternoon in the office of the Jay County Clerk. He will seek the Republican nomination for Commissioner of the South District. The seat is currently held by Gary Theurer, who has said he does not plan to run for re-election.
Redkey resident Gerald Kirby, like Zimmerman a current member of the Jay County Council, has filed to run for the Democratic nomination for the south district commissioners seat.
Schemenaur, who served on the county council from 1989 to 2004, has been a principal for 12 years and a teacher in the Jay School Corporation for eight-plus years prior to that.
A release sent Friday by the Indiana House Democratic Caucus announced Schemenaur's decision. Schemenaur said at midday Friday that he planned to file paperwork in connection with his candidacy later in the day in Indianapolis.
"There has never been a more vital time for us to put political differences aside and work toward the common goal of doing what is best for all Hoosiers," Schemenaur said in the press release.
Schemenaur has been married to wife Pam for 29 years. They are the parents of two children: Wesley, an attorney; and Whitney, a college student.
Also this week, Portland resident and attorney Max Ludy Jr. filed in Indianapolis to seek the Republican nomination for Jay Superior Court Judge. Ludy announced his intention last week to seek the seat currently held by Joel Roberts, who plans to retire at the end of this year, his 20th on the bench.
Filing for major party candidates for the May 6 primary closes at noon on Friday, Feb. 22. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 4.[[In-content Ad]]
