School board not listening to tax payers (09/29/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

This time I partially agree with Dr. Long when he said, "What's right is right, and what's wrong is wrong." That is how most taxpayers and I feel about the property taxes, the auxiliary gymnasium, and now the $250,000 tennis court. What's right is right, and what's wrong is wrong. You thinking the taxpayers care about or want the gymnasium or tennis court is wrong

I am certain that the school board and administration have insulted the taxpayers by saying they are going to build this neutral-tax gym and that it will not cost the taxpayers any more. This is defying the wishes of the people by stating they will build this gym regardless.

If anyone thinks for one minute we believe this is not going to cost the taxpayers, you have another thing coming. Now they want to ram the tennis courts down our throats by spending a minimum of $240,000 plus engineering fees.

I think we should change the name of this corporation to the Jay County School Board and Administrators Center for Amateur Sports Careers and Secondary Education for the Gifted Corporation.

The emphasis on education will be if time allows, and the state continues to finance the educational portion. If the state cuts the educational portion of this school corporation, heaven help our children. This corporation would seek other ways to spend the taxpayers' money or collapse into total despair. Heaven forbid if this school board and administration decided to act responsibly on behalf of taxpayers by listening to their wants and needs before the sky begins to fall.

When you rub me the wrong way and are arrogant enough to smirk and less than casually listen when members of the public are speaking, it become exasperated and do not appreciate it one bit. This is one of the most spendthrift bunch of people I have ever seen, next to the United States and Indiana legislature, on stupidity and spending. If the board or administration has any problems with to whom I am referring, please, count yourself all in.

It appears that I will be one of the very few that is taking up this cause but I am personally going to do everything I can to stop this uncaring and unappreciative board and administration which appears to be financially challenged novices and unresponsive to the genuine needs for the children of Jay County.

It does appear that most people in Jay County prefer not to attend meetings that spend their money foolishly such as the school board. Then someone sends me an unsigned letter saying they agree with me but state they do not want me to get obnoxious. It is not my intention to be obnoxious, but with little public participation, it is rather difficult to not be unpleasant at some times.

Standing in the background does nothing for the big spenders and they get their chuckles when John Ireland, Fred Conkling and I are the only people showing up for meetings. It appears we fight alone for you. We three pay taxes but no longer have children in school and we still care. Do you?

This school board and administration sees the Jay County taxpayer as non-caring because they show for one meeting and that is the end of the taxpayers' cry. This fight is about taxes, education, buildings, sports, buses, maintenance, administration and school board. It is also about huge debt, spending, and the responsibility to the owners of Jay County schools - the taxpayers. Read The CR and see the sheriff's and tax sales of properties and this is only the tip of the "moneyberg." The moneyberg is a tax that grows and grows under the surface to a size far greater than you can actually see. The largest portion of the moneyberg is hidden like many projects and overspending done by taxing entities. Reminds me of the rapidly-growing school corporation and indebtedness.

This board and administration passes this subject off nonchalantly. If they have no money to spend, they will no longer run for office or will take a position elsewhere and we will be stuck with bailing them out. Sound familiar?

The next school board meeting is Monday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m., at 404 E. Arch St.
