School building timeline revisited (03/15/06)

Fort Recovery School Board

By By BETH A. CLAYTON-

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery Local Schools superintendent David Riel again led a discussion concerning the Ohio School Facilities Commission at a board meeting Tuesday.

Though the board in January chose to opt out of a deal with OSFC that would supplement building costs on the construction and renovation of a new high school building, members will have the opportunity to participate next year.

Riel presented the board with two tentative timelines — one involving OSFC and one not — designed to involve the community in a discussion during the next several months.

A timeline presented at the last board meeting in February did not include the possibility that the board will again opt out of the OSFC funding.

Riel said the overall vision of a construction project will be considered at a special work session on April 11, after which a committee including community members will be formed by June.

According to the schedule, the committee will meet several times between August and December 2006, and will hold two community forums, and will submit a recommendation to the board at a work session in January 2007.

The board also voted to accept changes to the Tri Star agreement, a deal that allows several Mercer County schools to share facilities for career-technical programs at Coldwater, St. Marys and Celina high schools.

Changes to the 20-year old deal were minor, including amending language to refer to the school system as Fort Recovery Local Schools instead of Southwest Local Schools, as it used to be called.

In addition, the Tri Star agreement will now be renewed every five years, instead of every 20.

In other business, the board voted not to participate in a division of the Ohio School Board Association Legal Assistance Fund at an annual cost of $250.

Fort Schools treasurer Lori Koch said that while Ohio school systems are encouraged to join, it is not mandatory and Fort Schools will still have access to legal advice through OSBA.

Koch said that the board felt it was not a responsible way to spend money at this time.[[In-content Ad]]
