School bus involved in crash near Fiat (01/25/08)

By By RACHELLE HAUGHN-

Two local students were taken to the hospital this morning following a five-vehicle chain reaction crash near Fiat involving a school bus and semi.

A West Jay Middle School eighth-grader and a Pennville Elementary School second-grader were taken to Jay County Hospital by Jay Emergency Medical Service, Jay School Corporation assistant superintendent Wood Barwick said this morning.

The West Jay student suffered a bruised forehead from hitting her head on the seat in front of her. The female Pennville student suffered back pain, he said.

"My assessment was they weren't injured too bad," Barwick said. He was at the school corporation's bus barn when he heard the accident reported over the bus communication radios. He then went to the hospital and stayed with the students until their parents arrived.

Indiana State Police public information officer Rod Russell said he believes there may have been a total of six people injured in the accident.

The patients were taken to JCH, Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, and Bluffton Regional Hospital, he said. ISP are investigating the accident.

The accident occurred on Ind. 18, a half-mile east of Ind. 1. It was reported about 7:10 a.m.

The collision happened when the westbound school bus, which had 21 students on board, stopped to pick up a student. Three vehicles were stopped behind the bus.

The vehicles and bus then began to continue west. A semi truck then struck the vehicle at the rear of the line, causing a chain reaction.

Russell said he did not know why the semi truck was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident.

The impact caused a Ford Taurus to go under the rear of the bus, Russell said.

The school bus's stop arm was out, and the red lights were flashing just as they were supposed to, he said.

"It was quite frightening for (the students)," Barwick said. The uninjured students were taken by another bus to Pennville Elementary School, and their parents were called. Five students were taken to their schools, while the rest went home with their parents.

Barwick said the school corporation has set up a crisis plan for such emergencies. "Everything went as it's supposed to go," he said.

Jay County Sheriff Ray Newton said Jay County police, Indiana State Police, Rescue 19, Montpelier and Geneva police, Pennville Fire Department and ambulances from Wells, Adams and Blackford counties responded to the scene. Samaritan helicopter was initially called to the scene but told to disregard.

"I think all the ambulances in Jay County showed up," Newton said.

The highway was closed between Ind. 1 and U.S. 27, until about 10 a.m., police said.

"It's bad, but it could be worse," Barwick said.[[In-content Ad]]
