School plans on hold

By JACK RONALD
Publisher emeritus

A proposed redistricting plan for Jay County elementary schools has been put on hold.
Superintendent Tim Long told school board members and administrators that he believes the issue will require more study, particularly when it comes to students living in rural parts of the county.
“I believe the change in (Portland) will be one that will cause little to no disruption for students, so that aspect of the plan is still under consideration,” Long said.
Long had proposed June 13 to send students who live in the Piedmont and Maple Heights apartment complexes from General Shanks Elementary School to Judge Haynes Elementary School.
Two other changes, now on hold, would have sent some General Shanks students to
Pennville Elementary School and some others to Redkey Elementary School.
For several years, the school corporation has freely allowed elementary student transfers from one school to another.
“Currently the district has almost 200 transfers,” Long said in his email.
“These types of discussions have been held in the county before, and I think that people would like more time to discuss and look at the issues and affected areas,” Long said.
He proposed that the matter be reviewed during the 2011-2012 school year with any decision coming next spring.
“That will give ample time for debate and discussion,” Long said. “We are continuing to try to be as frugal and efficient as we can.  Our budget is holding firm, but we must look to the future and not waste any resources that we can easily address through being more efficient.”[[In-content Ad]]
