School races set (08/23/2008)
Jay School Board
Two candidates waited until the final hour to become candidates for the Jay School Board.
Filing petitions Friday just before noon were James R. Sanders and Duane Starr.
Sanders, who has been a persistent critic of government spending - especially by the school system - over the past year, is a resident of 420 E. Votaw St., Portland.
He will be running for the District 1 seat against Zeb L. Sutton, 1019 W. High St., Portland.
That seat is currently held by Frank Vormohr, who did not seek re-election.
Starr's entry into the race for the District 6 seat made it a three-way race.
Starr, a former school board member and a resident of 8274 South 600 East, Portland, will face incumbent Greg Wellman, 8340 North 700 East, Bryant, and challenger Dalton VanSkyock, 5327 East 200 North, Portland, in the Nov. 4 election.
District 6 represents Wabash, Noble, Madison and Pike townships.
Unopposed in the 2009 school board election is incumbent Michael A. Masters, 9661 West 400 South, Redkey. Masters represents District 4, which includes Knox Township and Richland Township outside the city of Dunkirk.
