School system, state don't feel our pain (08/30/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

As an elderly person and a citizen of this community and state, it is frustrating to live month after month with no money while I watch more and more money go into an educational system that spends more and accomplishes less than ever.

I can't pay my mortgage payment because the property taxes continue to go up higher and higher. Maybe I can move into the new gym at the high school since all my money goes to pay for it.

The school superintendent makes more money than I make in a lifetime of working, and our students continue to come out less and less educated. What does he care? He does not live in our community. He takes the money and heads out of town every day. We pay the taxes and he collects.

The school keeps screaming it needs more money and more buildings, yet they are unable to teach our kids a basic education. They build gyms and swimming pools and give our children a second-rate education.

Maybe when the gym is full, we can all move in the governor's mansion. We pay his taxes too, and he is immune to the increases. He doesn't care about the people of this state. He is only concerned with raising more and more taxes and building roads and new football stadiums with it.

He doesn't care about the people who are losing their lifelong homes because of his political schemes.

If we don't stand up soon and vote out these people on the school board and the politicians who rape the taxpayers and demand the resignation of the superintendent, there will be nothing left in Portland or Indiana but the school buildings.

The properties will all be vacant, as people will have nothing left to pay for them.

Car thanks

To the editor:

I would like to thank The Commercial Review for the great job publicizing the 2007 Hollow Block Monster Car, Truck, Motorcycle and Rat Rod Show held on Saturday, July 21 in Portland.

The Hollow Block Monster Cruisers decided six years ago to start a benefit show to raise money for a child or family that is in a crisis situation. This year, the show benefited Kendon Hoover of Winchester.

Kendon found out that he had Hodgkin's disease, when he went to the doctor thinking he had Strep throat. He has to go to Riley Hospital for Children and Ball Hospital to receive medical treatments for his disease.

It is very hard to hear and read the stories during the search for a child or family to receive the show proceeds because I do not like to see anyone suffer.

But I definitely feel blessed when I see the child or family receive the proceeds after the show is over.

It makes each year's time and hard work putting the show together worth it.

Kendon was presented with a Hollow Block Monster shirt and a plaque making him a lifetime member of the Hollow Block Monster Cruisers.

This show cannot come together without the people that give time, talent, door prizes or donations. So, I want to thank everyone who had a part in helping this child.

A big thank you to all the sponsors who helped in making the 2007 Hollow Block Monster Car, Truck, Motorcycle and Rat Rod Show the best show yet.
