Schools made good decision (2/10/04)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

I would like to commend our school administration for their decision to close school. This decision couldn’t have been easy to make, but I’m thinking of a few years back when a terrific teacher lost his life and several were injured, including the Champ girl. I’m sure the administration then only wish they had done things differently.

There is no way that you could pay me enough to be in this position. The weather is unpredictable and can change at any moment and it takes considerable time to get all the students home. It’s not a 15 or 30 minute drive as it might be for Mr. Snyder. Maybe we aren’t supposed to consider the students that drive or the teachers or any of the support staff trying to go to work or coming home. But as a substitute for the school system I am glad that so much effort goes into making these decisions. I don’t know of anyone that wants to be in school in June, but if it means that we’ve saved a life, so be it.

Maybe Mr. Snyder would like to drive some of our county roads and decide which students we pick up and which we leave at home. Half of the class would be so far behind that they would never catch up. Maybe he would like to ride with the bus drivers trying to get these students home with the windshield and mirrors icing up. I have — believe me, it’s no picnic. One year, it was 8 p.m. before students were home. Buses couldn’t climb the hills or stay on blacktop roads.

The classroom isn’t much fun either. Teachers and students are al wondering if they will make it home safely. Students are looking out the windows finding it difficult to concentrate and teachers are trying to keep the students’ minds on their schoolwork.

Maybe Mr. Snyder would like to put in a 13-hour day trying to clear the roads with our county guys, sleep a few hours, only to try again the next day. I’m sure they have heard all the complaints that they care to. On Sunday, county road 100 North was clear and county road 300 North was a sheet of ice. I’m glad that I don’t have to drive the roads at four in the morning, chance destroying my personal vehicle, or make the call to cancel school. This is more than one person’s decision and they are all doing a fine job.

An alternate plan would be nice, just not practical and definitely not worth the risk of taking a life or destruction of property. What’s wrong with going in June if it means everyone can attend without risks. It would be the safer alternative, in my opinion.

Sincerely,

Karen Hirschy
