Schwinn is a time machine

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
So you want to go to the grocery. Let’s take a trip on my Schwinn. We will start out on West Third Street to Lucille and Dud Corle’s grocery, down the alley and around the corner from Middle Street.
Then we will pedal over to the Jack Spratt store owned by Lowell Hardy, who is brother to Lucille Corle. We will go one block north to Main Street and visit Fred Councilman’s grocery. Now we will go north again to Arch Street and stop at Beula Hillery’s store, a quiet little place in the shade.
Now back east to Western Avenue, go north to Race Street and see Vic and Helen Welch on the corner of Race and Western.
We will go north to Votaw Street and then east to Pleasant Street, and there is Poling Grocery.
Now we will head downtown to Meridian Street, and there is Quincy Miller’s store close to the Eagles Lodge across from City Hall.
And then on one half-block to the corner of High and Meridian is McDaniel’s Grocery next to the Princess Theatre. Then one half-block south is Cox’s store, with live rabbits and fresh fish.
Down south another block across the street is Imel Brothers’ grocery, before they relocated to the 200 block of West Main Street.

Back south on Meridian Street at the Water Street corner was the Boston Store and snuggled beside was Weldon and Dorothy Hamma’s grocery, before they relocated to the Perdieu Building at the corner of Seventh and Meridian streets, which is now a motorcycle shop.
Just a few blocks east on the point of Boundary Pike stood Smitley’s Market. Now we ride north on Wayne to Water Street and go east one block to Jerry Smith’s grocery store, now Joy’s antique shop. Go east to Morton Street, turn north toward the fairgrounds and you will pass Wesley and Dave Loy’s market. At Votaw, turn back west and you will cme to Vinne Green’s grocery, right beside Haynes Mill.
Pedal on west to Meridian Street and go north to Lafayette and you will see Black’s grocery. Of course, we still had Marsh’s on East Main Street and Kroger at the location today of the Ritz Theatre.
I was able to take this trip because I had a good paper route delivering The Commercial Review and a trusty bicycle.
My legs are getting a little tired on this trip, but please let me know if I missed some groceries from around 60 years ago.
