DELPHOS, Ohio — To say Joscie Kaup is hot might be a bit of an understatement at this point. She is one sizzling senior.

And the Fort Recovery girls basketball team is on fire.

The Indians won their seventh game in eight tries Tuesday with a 59-41 victory over the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays.

Their only loss during the stretch was a five-point defeat at the hands of the Division IV No. 3 Marion Local Flyers.

Kaup put together her third straight game of more than 20 points, tossing 27 on the scoreboard against St. Johns. She scored 17 of her game-high total in the second half, including the first four points of a 13-0 Indian run to end the third period.

The rally turned what was a tight game for two and a half quarters into a rout.

“(During) the first part of the year we thought it was incredibly important for Joscie to keep the rest of the team involved,” said Fort Recovery coach Jeff Roessner, citing the youth of his squad.

But, now that this year’s version of the Tribe has half a season of experience under its belt the focus has changed. Before the game against Marion Local two weeks ago Roessner told Kaup it was time for her to become and even greater offensive weapon.

She was happy to oblige, scoring 23 points in the loss to the Flyers and posting 24 in a victory over Fort Loramie (10-2) Tuesday.

“Now coach told me to be more aggressive,” said Kaup. “I told myself I’d start taking the ball to the hole more and be more of a scoring threat.

“I think right now our team is all on the same page. That’s something we need going into the tournament.”

Kaup said she wants to have an extended stay in the state tournament, in which the Indians haven’t been past the sectional round in the last two seasons. And if she keeps playing as she has — she has raised her conference-leading scoring average to 16 points per game — Fort Recovery could certainly make a run.

The Tribe (9-6, 3-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) put St. Johns away with the big run to end the third quarter Thursday.

After Kaup got things started, Holly Stein followed with her lone bucket of the game. St. Johns tried to stop the bleeding with a timeout, but Jenn Stahl nailed back-to-back baskets before Olivia Post took an assist from Ciera Rammel and drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The flurry gave the Indians a 47-32 lead heading into the final period.

St. Johns (6-6, 2-3 MAC) scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to cut the gap, but they never got closer than 10 points.

“I think our defensive pressure wore them down,” said Roessner. “I really felt like were in better condition than they were. That’s really a credit to how hard they’ve been working.”

That effort didn’t look to be around in the first quarter, as the Indians seemed content to let the Blue Jays’ 6-foot-1 Andrea Morrow and 5-foot-11 Michelle Minnig grab any rebound which came close to them.

However, Fort Recovery came out with a new aggression in the second quarter.

Trailing 16-12 after being outrebounded 11-7 in the first period, Stahl sparked the change. She had five of her team-high seven rebounds in the period, and the Tribe outworked St. Johns on the glass by a 34-18 margin over the final three quarters.

Roessner said in addition to the rebounding effort, his team made more “hustle plays” in the second half than it had in the first.

Stahl also had her second straight solid offensive output, hitting 6-of-10 from the field for 12 points. She said winning has been part of the learning process after the Indians opened the season at 2-5.

“I think we’re learning to finish the game,” said Stahl. “In practice we’re getting after it more. We know what it feels like now, and we want to keep on doing it.

“We’re a lot more confident in each other now. It makes us work harder — a lot harder.”

Following Stahl in the rebounding department were Megan Wenning and Kaup with six boards apiece, and Stein with five. Ciera Rammel had four assists, and Krystal Rammel and Vicki Roessner added three apiece.

Minnig shot 5-of-6 from the field and had a team-high 12 points for St. Johns. She also had seven rebounds, six of which came in the first half.

Allison Elwer joined Minnig in double figures with 10 points. Morrow had a game-high nine rebounds, including seven in the first half.

Fort Recovery will try to continue its hot streak when it hosts New Bremen Thursday at 6 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
