Second-ranked Tigers dominate Fort Recovery (09/17/05)

FRHS football

VERSAILLES, Ohio — When a team with a 3-0 record meets a team with an 0-3 record, it’s not surprising that one leaves the field 4-0 and the other goes home 0-4.

Fort Recovery ran into a steamroller Friday night, beaten up by the Division V No. 2 Versailles Tigers 62-0 in a game that saw the Indians behind 48-zip at the half.

The numbers were staggeringly lopsided: Fort Recovery with 75 yards passing, Versailles with 217; Fort Recovery with 44 net yards rushing, Versailles with 326.

Two Versailles rushers — Matt Murphy and Curtis Wourms — racked up 181 yards between them while the Indians’ total offense was 119. The Indians converted on third down just 18.8 percent of the time, while Versailles converted more than 55 percent of the time.

And it could have been worse, with Versailles backing off a bit in the second half and sending in the second string.

The Versailles scoreboard festivities began at 7:54 in the first one a 9-yard touchdown run by Russ Beisner.

On their next possession, thanks to a Fort Recovery fumble, Versailles scored again on a 7-yard run by Matt Murphy.

The third first-quarter touchdown came on a pass play from Tony McNeilan to Stephen Winner that was good for 84 yards and the TD for a 21-0 lead.

Versailles wasted no time in the second, scoring another touchdown with 11:32 on the clock, this one on a 19-yard run by Curtis Wourms.

Then, with 8:39 left in the half, Beisner ran it in from the 3-yard line for another Versailles touchdown.

Still in the second quarter, with 5:27 on the clock, McNeilan hit Andy Francis with a pass good for 41 yards and a touchdown. Zac Richard missed the extra point — his only miss in seven attempts on the night — as the Tigers went up 41-0.

Then, to round out the first half, Wourms scrambled for 21 yards and another touchdown for the 48-point halftime lead.

With starters getting a breather for Versailles in the second half, Andy Francis scored on a 1-yard run at 10:42 in the third. The final TD of the night came on a 12-yard run by David Oliver at 6:41 in the fourth quarter.[[In-content Ad]]
