Commissioners, other county officials to discuss courthouse safety
By By Mike Snyder-
Courthouse safety and security is an issue that has been discussed several times over the past few years by Jay County Commissioners.
This time around, the commissioners have decided to add a few more voices to the conversation.
The commissioners, after discussions Monday morning with Ralph Frazee, director of Jay County Emergency Management, appointed a committee to develop a safety plan for county-owned buildings.
Commissioners Milo Miller Jr., Gary Theurer and Faron Parr will serve on the committee, along with a variety of county officials.
Miller said Monday that the Indiana Association of County Commissioners has pressured member counties for years to improve courthouse security and safety.
Frazee gave the commissioners copies of a sample safety/security plan for their review.
It covers plans and procedures for a variety of scenarios, including fire, tornado, bomb threats, armed intruders, hostage situations, chemical/biological attacks and earthquakes.
The committee, in addition to the commissioners, will be comprised of: commissioners’ attorney, sheriff, county auditor, county clerk, county recorder, the judges of Jay Circuit and Superior courts, circuit court bailiff and the courthouse custodian.
Miller said Monday that he will call a meeting of the committee within 30 days.
Also Monday, the commissioners agreed to allow an official from LifeStream Services Inc. make a presentation to courthouse employees and the public about services available for those giving care to members of their family — especially the elderly.
Judy Rust, manager of LifeStream’s CareGiver program, will schedule two 45-minute sessions in a single day — most likely at 11 a.m. and noon. The sessions would be open to courthouse employees or members of the public.
Those attending would be asked to bring their own lunch.
“The main thing is to let people know where they can get the information,” Rust said.
