Service for 911 changed (07/24/07)
Jay County Commissioners
By By TRAVIS MINNEAR-
Come late September, there will be a new company servicing the county's 911 system.
Jay County Commissioners approved a request from the sheriff's department to switch maintenance providers from EMBARQ to Emergency Radio Service Inc. when the current contract expires on Sept. 23.
ERS agreed to match the price offered by EMBARQ, Bill Baldwin, Jay County's 911 coordinator, said. EMBARQ currently charges $5,227.44 a year for maintenance and will continue to provide phone service.
"The calls still go through EMBARQ and come through the jail and our equipment," Baldwin said.
"It's that equipment that ERS is going to maintain."
Baldwin said another reason for the switch is that the qualified technician able to work on the system will be much closer in case of emergency.
"The guy they (ERS) have now is in Fort Wayne ... as opposed to a guy (from EMBARQ) with a three hour drive just to get here," he said.
Commissioners also approved the purchase of a personal computer by County Assessor Anita Mills for $901 from Progressive Office Products.
Commissioner Faron Parr said the original price was supposed to be $800, but necessary upgrades to the computer added to the price.
"The biggest one was upgrading the memory," Parr said.
In other business, commissioners agreed to:
•Continue discussion of the proposed countywide public smoking ban. Commissioner Gary Theurer said they are reviewing evidence and waiting for contact from the Jay County Health Department about the issue.
•Pay The Henry P. Thompson Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, $15,493 for materials used for construction on the county's portion of the sewer line running from the Poet Biorefining ethanol plant in Portland to the Jay County wastewater treatment plant.
•Pay $3,062.91 to Creek Run L.L.C. Environmental Engineering, Montpelier, for engineering services, tests and reports pertaining to the 1998 removal of underground storage tanks at the Jay County jail. The work was to check the status of site and make sure that no contamination occurred.
•Pay $501 to Charles D. Turner for a grant of a permanent and temporary easement for sanitary sewer work, and $36 to the Jay County recorder for recording fees related to the easement.[[In-content Ad]]
