Service survey planned (4/27/04)

Commissioners planning to distribute surveys

An effort by a neighboring county to find out how well the public is being served helped convince Jay County Commissioners to do the same.

The commissioners, who recently learned that a public feedback form is being distributed in Delaware County, asked Jay County auditor Freda Corwin to prepare a similar survey for use in Jay County.

The commissioners said they would distribute the survey forms in all courthouse offices and in other places where the public interacts with county government.

Commissioners Milo Miller Jr., Gary Theurer and Mike Leonhard said they planned to review the surveys periodically and discuss findings with elected officials.

Theurer said that some elected officials might object to the process, but Miller replied that “We’re the county executive, and we’re in charge of what goes on in the courthouse.”

Also Monday, the commissioners learned from county emergency management director Ralph Frazee that the county will be receiving a $50,000 Department of Homeland Security grant.

Approximately $7,000 of the grant funds must be used for law enforcement purposes. Frazee plans to discuss and plan possible uses of the grant funds with area law enforcement and fire officials.

In other business, the commissioners:

•Agreed to hire a local company to remove two trees flanking the west entrance to the Jay County Courthouse. The crabapple trees are diseased and dying. A new variety of tree will be planted in the fall.

•Renewed the annual operating permit for the Jay County Landfill. The permit, which expires April 30, carries a $35,000 fee which is placed into the county’s infrastructure fund.

•Signed a proclamation in recognition of National Infant Immunization Week April 25 to May 1.

•Approved two change orders for the gym construction project at the West Jay Community Center, including the addition of tile on a walking path around the outside of the gym floor. The commissioners are involved with the project because they were asked to be the applicant for a $496,000 state grant that was the project’s major funding source.[[In-content Ad]]
