Sewer contract awarded
Board picks St. Henry firm
An Ohio company was selected Thursday to complete a major sewer project on the southeast side of Portland.
Work in the Steen Addition, which includes Massachusetts and Pittsburg avenues and other streets in the area, could begin around Labor Day (Sept. 6) and is expected to take about 10 months to complete.
The project, which will include the installation of new sanitary and storm sewers, is being done to reduce the amount of storm water in Portland’s sanitary sewer system and to improve drainage in the often-flooded neighborhood.
It was originally scheduled as part of the Boundary Pike-Wayne Street reconstruction project, but was removed as a cost-saving measure.
The Portland Board of Works awarded a $683,362.70 contract Thursday to Bruns Building and Development Corporation, St. Henry, Ohio.
That contract included six alternates for re-paving five streets and an alley.
Portland received a $600,000 grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs for the project. But since the city is responsible for 37 percent of the total project cost, it is likely some of the grant funds will be returned to the state.
In addition to the contract, there are also engineering fees of $108,900. The original engineer’s estimate for the contract was $980,000.
Voting to approve the contract were board members Bill Gibson, Robert McCreery and Mayor Bruce Hosier.
City Clerk-Treasurer Randy Geesaman said this morning that OCRA has been informed that the contract has been awarded and the city is awaiting clearance to begin work.
The city’s local match of $380,500 is coming from the sewage depreciation fund.
Also Thursday, the board approved one sewer bill adjustment and tabled another.
An adjustment was approved for Pit’s Cocktail Lounge, 214 N. Meridian Street. A leak between the water meter and the building had caused an abnormally-high water and sewer bill for the business. The board approved an adjustment for the sewer portion of the bill for the past three months.
Board members tabled action on a sewer bill adjustment for a property at 811 N. Franklin Ave. owned by Allan and Lisa Sloniker. The board asked for more information before making a decision on the request.[[In-content Ad]]
