Shatto picks up 1st win for Mastodons (3/21/09)

Josh Shatto is a winner.

The 2006 Jay County High School graduate picked up his first Division I victory Wednesday, pitching the IPFW baseball team to an 8-3 victory over Toledo.

Shatto got the start and went five innings, allowing three runs - two earned - on two hits and three walks. He struck out three batters before giving way to junior Scott Micinski, who tossed four scoreless innings for the save.

All three of Toledo's runs came in the first inning before Shatto faced just one over the minimum in the second through fifth innings.

Thomas McCowan, who graduated from JCHS in 2008, got the start at third base in the game. He drew a walk as part of IPWF's two-run fourth inning.

Shatto, who spent his first two seasons at Ancilla before joining the Mastodons this year, has made three appearances on the mound and carries an 8.00 ERA. He is 1-0 with eight strikeouts and eight walks in nine innings, and has a batting average against of just .235.

Joseph Vormohr

Jay County - 2006

Turned in a third-place finish for the Hanover College men's track team, which placed sixth out of 15 teams March 14 at the Southern Track and Field Invitational hosted by Birmingham-Southern College.

Vormohr launched the discus 141 feet, 11 inches, which was more than four feet further than fourth-place finisher Leander McKenzie of Troy. A pair of Troy athletes, Ryan Schmeling and Michael Martin, led the field at 147 feet, 6 inches.

Josh Atkinson

Jay County - 2006

Earned his first win of the season Sunday, tossing 3 1/3 innings of relief as the Manchester College baseball team defeated Marian 12-7.

Atkinson entered the game in the fourth inning and closed out the game, allowing four runs - three earned - on five hits. Manchester scored five times in the top of the seventh inning, and Atkinson tossed a scoreless bottom of the frame to preserve the victory.

The junior also pitched in relief March 13 in an 11-9 loss to IU-Southeast. He gave up eight runs, only one of which was earned, on eight hits and five walks in 3 2/3 innings.

Atkinson has the best ERA on the Spartan squad with a 3.6 mark in 10 innings. He has struck out four batters.
