Sheriff urges reimbursement if deputies leave early (04/22/08)
Jay County Commissioners
By By JACK RONALD-
Sheriff Ray Newton wants to make sure Jay County gets the service of deputies it pays to train.
County commissioners Monday asked attorney George Lopez to draw up a resolution which, once it is enacted, would require new deputies to sign a four-year contract.
The contract would stipulate that if a deputy left the department in a year or less after completion of training, he or she would be required to reimburse the county $4,500. If the deputy left one to two years after training, the reimbursment would be $3,500. If the deputy left two to three years after training, it would be $2,500.
Reimbursement would fall to $1,500 if the deputy left four to five years after training.
Commissioners were unanimous in approving a change in the way economic development income tax funds are distributed to units of local government. The change, recommended by Jay County Development Corporation executive director Bill Bradley, means that as EDIT revenue comes in from the state it would be automatically released to units of local government.
In the past, the county has held those funds until they are requested.
Commissioners also agreed to release EDIT funds that are now being held.
In other business, the commissioners:
•Signed a lease for an office on North Commerce Street for the Community Corrections program. The office had formally been occupied by attorney Brad Burkett and is in a building owned by Todd Penrod and Mitch Sutton.
•Approved a final proposal from KareMar Productions, Mooreland, for interior signs at the Jay County Courthouse to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. KareMar has been working with Display Craft, Portland, on the project. The signs will cost about $8,053.
•Heard complaints about road conditions on county road 300 South east of Ind. 1 and directed the Jay County Highway Department to grade the road.
•Learned from emergency management agency director Ralph Frazee of a district-wide exercise to be held April 26.[[In-content Ad]]
