Shreve places third in Mid-American

A Jay County High School graduate proved to be one of the best all-around athletes in the Mid-American Conference.

Dexter Shreve, class of 2009, helped the Kent State University men's track team to a third-place finish in the Mid-American Conference Championships by placing third Saturday in the decathlon.

He finished with 6,727 points in the event, trailing only senior Daniel Kinsey (7,313) and sophomore Bjorn Johnasson (7,076) of Akron.

Shreve won four of the 10 decathlon events, including a dominating effort in the 400-meter dash. He was the only competitor to break the 50-second mark, winning easily in 48.98 seconds.

The freshman also took the 100 dash in 11.08 and the 1,500 run with a time of 4:47.13. He shared the top spot in the high jump with junior teammate Michael Schober at 6 feet, 4 ¾ inches.

Shreve was the long jump runner-up at 21 feet, 10 ¾ inches. He was also fifth in the pole vault, sixth in the shot put and javelin, seventh in the 100 hurdles and ninth in the discus.

Tyler Rigby

Jay County - 2006

Picked up a pair of awards May 7 at the Indiana University - East athletics awards ceremony.

Rigby was honored with the Champions of Character Award for his work within the community. He was a leader of weekly team visits to help students at Highland Heights Elementary School and organized a food and clothing drive during the 2009 holiday season.

The junior also earned the Red Wolves' Male Athlete of the Year Award for the second straight season. He became the IU-East men's basketball all-time leading scorer this year and was named to All-KIAC and NAIA All-America teams.

Josh Ludy

Jay County - 2008

Helped lead the Baylor University baseball team to a 12-5 victory Sunday over Texas Tech.

Ludy started at designated hitter and racked up four hits in five at bats. One of those hits was a double, and he drove in a pair of runs.

The sophomore has started eight games this season and is hitting .366.

Amanda Johnson

Jay County - 2008

Turned in a victory for the Indiana Wesleyan University women's track team May 12 at the Tiffin Twilight meet.

Johnson cruised to victory in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2 minutes, 21.67 second seconds. She was more than 11 seconds ahead of runner-up Natasha Low of Cuyahoga Community College.

She also finished eighth in the 800 run at the Toledo Tune-up May 7 with a time of 2:17.17.

Amber Edmundson

Jay County - 2008

Pitched the Ancilla College softball team to victory May 6 in its final game of the season.

Edmundson earned her eighth victory as the Chargers scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to eke out a 7-6 victory. Ancilla lost the opener, 5-4.

The sophomore went 2-for-3 at the plate in game one while adding a run and an RBI.

Thomas McCowan

Jay County - 2008

Came away with two hits Saturday as the Sinclair Community College baseball team's season came to an end in the regional tournament.

McCowan finished 2-for-3 in Sinclair's first regional game, a 4-2 loss to Muskegon. He had a double, and also scored a run.

He finished his sophomore season with a .339 batting average, 41 hits, four doubles, 21 RBIs and 26 runs.

Brandon Reynard

Jay County - 2009

Picked up a second-place finish for the Indiana Tech men's track team May 7 at the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Championships.

Reynard was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.82, trailing only senior teammate Russell Dill. He also teamed with Lucien Harris, David Army and Dill to win the WHAC title in the 4x400 relay in 3:16.4.

Josh Atkinson

Jay County - 2006

Earned his eighth win of the year May 7 as the Manchester College baseball team defeated Hanover 14-12.

Atkinson allowed 10 runs on nine hits and seven walks, but still left the game with a 12-10 lead. He struck out six batters in 6 2/3 innings.

He finished 8-3 with 48 strikeouts in 76 innings.[[In-content Ad]]
