Shreve sets record in heptathlon

Dexter Shreve, a 2009 Jay County High School graduate, obliterated Kent State University’s heptathlon record as he led the team at Friday’s Akron Invitational.
Shreve won two of the seven heptathlon events, fighting off the host Zips’ Alex McCune by one tenth of a second in the 60-meter dash in 7.02 seconds. He also took the top spot in the 1,000 run with a time of 2 minutes, 42.97 seconds.
He also tied for third in the high jump at 6 feet, 5 inches, and placed fifth in the 60 hurdles, pole vault and long jump.
Shreve posted a winning score of 5,525 points, far surpassing the record of 5,403 set by Chris Caine in 2007.
Katie Simmons
Jay County – 2012
Also competed at the Akron Invitational as she ran for the IPFW women’s track team.
Simmons turned in a 17th-place finish in the 5,000-meter run in 18 minutes, 54.24 seconds.
The freshman placed seventh with a time of 5:30.98 Saturday in the mile run at the IPFW Invitational. She was also 10th in the 3,000 run in 10:57.25.
Simmons, who runs cross country as well for the Mastodons, was also honored as a Summit League Academic Distinguished Scholar for the fall season. Athletes must have at least a 3.6 grade point average in order to be eligible for the award.
Brandon Reynard
Jay County – 2009
Joined Simmons in running at the IPFW Invitational as he competed for the Indiana Tech men’s track team.
Reynard was part of the Warriors’ domination in the 400-meter dash. He finished third with a time of 50.54 as Indiana Tech swept the top 11 places.
Joanna Snyder

Helped the NCAA Division III Ohio Northern University women’s basketball team extend its school-record winning streak to 20 games Wednesday as it defeated Heidelberg 70-58.
Snyder recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds as the Polar Bears improved to 21-1 overall and 15-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference to secure at least a share of the OAC regular season title. She also had one steal, one assist and one block.
The senior finished with 18 points, four rebounds and one assist in Saturday’s 80-49 win over Muskingum.
Erika Waugh
South Adams – 2011
Helped power the Calvin College women’s swim team to a 166-133 victory Saturday over host Albion.
Waugh turned in a victory for the Knights, taking the top spot in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11 minutes, 28.84 seconds. She was also the runner-up with a time of 2:22.65 in the 200 individual medley.
Mary Hudson
Jay County – 2012
Added a runner-up finish for Calvin as it defeated Albion.
Hudson finished the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 7.43 seconds to take second place. She teamed with Rachel Colasurdo, Kathryn Wrobel and Kristy Kinzer for second in the 200 medley relay in 2:06.22, and placed sixth in the 50 freestyle in 28.06.
Kendra Brunswick
Fort Recovery – 2011
Broke the 20-point barrier for the fifth straight game Saturday, racking up a career-high 35 for the Edison Community College women’s basketball team in its 95-35 trouncing of Lakeland.
Brunswick shot 15-of-19 from the field (79 percent) and 4-of-5 from long distance for her career-high total. She narrowly missed a double-double as she grabbed nine rebounds to go along with seven steals and four assists.
The sophomore also had nine points, three assists and two steals as the Chargers (13-5) fell 67-59 Wednesday to Cincinnati State.
Jordan McMillan
Jay County – 2011
Had a couple of top-six efforts for the Ball State University women’s track team at the Tom Hathaway Challenge hosted by the University of Indianapolis on Saturday.
McMillan won her heat of the 60-meter dash and finished fifth overall in 8.04 seconds. She also had a time of 26.87 for sixth place in the 200 dash.
Pazia Speed
Jay County – 2010
Tallied 17 points to lead the Huntington University women’s basketball team to its 55-51 victory over Mount Vernon on Saturday.
Speed shot 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-5 at the line for her game-high total. She also had five rebounds, four steals and one assist.
The junior finished with 12 points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist Wednesday as the Foresters (15-10) fell 65-56 to NAIA Division II No. 15 Bethel.
Erin Hunt
Jay County – 2011
Played for Bethel on Wednesday in its win against her former Patriot teammate’s Huntington squad.
Hunt saw 1:17 of action in the victory for the Pilots. She also grabbed one rebound Saturday as Bethel (20-6) defeated Saint Francis 52-49.
Hannah Moore
South Adams – 2012
Turned in a fourth-place finish Saturday for the Huntington University women’s track team, which placed fifth out of nine squads at the Joe Banks Invitational hosted by Ohio Northern.
Moore finished the 5,000-meter run in 19 minutes, 54.32 seconds, for fourth place. She also teamed with Krista Wood, Natalie Spahr and Amanda Henningfield for a runner-up finish in the distance medley in 13:53.06.
Greg Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2010
Was one of two University of Findlay men’s basketball players to score in double figures Saturday in the Oilers’ 56-51 loss to Hillsdale.
Kahlig finished with 10 points as Findlay slipped to 13-6 overall and 10-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He also had three rebounds and one steal.
Megan Taylor

Ran for the Manchester College women’s track team as it placed fourth out of six squads at the Anderson University Indoor Invitational on Saturday.
Taylor posted an 11th-place finish in the mile run for the Spartans in 5 minutes, 56.85 seconds. She joined Brittany Shuler, Anna McGowen and Britney March for a sixth-place finish in the 4x400 relay in 4:39.82.
Kylie Kahlig

Had a perfect night at the free-throw line Wednesday in the University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team’s 83-66 loss to Concordia.
Kahlig hit all of her four foul shots as she finished with seven points, three rebounds and two assists for the Racers (9-17). She also had four points, four rebounds and a block as UNOH fell 57-54 Saturday to Aquinas.
Cori Vormohr

Competed for the Ball State University women’s swim team on Saturday in its 175-104 loss to Miami (Ohio).
Vormohr took sixth place in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2 minutes, 28.17 seconds. She also posted a time of 1:08.53 for eighth in the 100 breaststroke.

Played for the University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team in its 88-86 loss to Concordia on Wednesday.
Pottkotter made his only field-goal attempt and finished with three points and one rebound. He had one steal for the Racers (15-10) in their 92-80 win over Michigan-Dearborn on Jan. 31, and saw 12 minutes of action Saturday in a 67-64 victory over Aquinas.

Competed in a pair of events for the Bethel College men’s track team Saturday at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational II.
