Shreve wins decathlon at All-Ohio

Dexter Shreve set a school record in the decathlon in the Golden Flashes’ opening meet of the season. Now he has an All-Ohio title to go with it.
Shreve, a 2009 Jay County High School graduate, led champion Kent State University to a sweep of the decathlon Saturday at the 12-team All-Ohio Championships hosted by Ohio.
He posted a winning total of 6,750 points to finish 48 ahead of teammate Tyler Jones. Kent State’s Kyle Tywon was third.
The Golden Flashes won the meet by 26 points over the Akron Zips.
Shreve won a pair of decathlon events, taking the 100-meter dash in 10.95 seconds and the 400 dash in 50.19. He was second in the long jump at 21 feet, 11 3/8 inches, and the shot put at 39 feet, 7 1/2 inches, and third in the 110 hurdles in 15.25 seconds and the pole vault at 13 feet, 7 3/8 inches.
Danielle Wellman
Wapahani – 2012
Came up with the key hit Tuesday in the Grace College softball team’s 3-0 victory over Bethel in the second game of a doubleheader.
Wellman smacked a two-run single to drive in Brooke Shell and Lacy Little in the fifth inning. The freshman also went 1-for-3 Friday as the Lancers (11-20) lost 3-0 to Madonna.
Jordan McMillan
Jay County – 2011
Turned in a couple of runner-up finishes Friday as the Ball State University women’s track team defeated IPFW and IUPUI as it hosted the Ball State Invitational.
McMillan helped the Cardinals dominate the sprints as she finished second to teammate Janae Taylor in the 100-meter dash in 12.53 seconds.
She was also the runner-up behind Taylor with a time of 26.4 in the 200 dash.
Katie Simmons
Jay County – 2012
Joined her former teammate in competing at the Ball State Outdoor Invitational on Friday.
Simmons turned in a sixth-place finish for the IPFW women’s team in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12 minutes, 51.31 seconds. She was also 11th at 20:39.19 in the 5,000 run.
Billy Wellman
Jay County – 2009
Helped the Ball State University baseball team to a 6-1 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday.
Wellman finished 1-for-4 with a walk and a run for the Cardinals (16-17). He also had a hit and an RBI in Sunday’s 6-3 loss to Central Michigan in the series finale, and a single in the opener on Friday.
The redshirt junior recorded one hit Wednesday in a 5-3 victory over Indiana.
Megan Taylor
Jay County – 2011
Helped the Manchester College women’s track team to a fourth-place finish Saturday at the seven-team Indiana Division III Championships hosted by Franklin.
Taylor placed sixth for the Spartans with a time of 5 minutes, 14.22 seconds, in the 1,500-meter run. She just missed a top-five finish as she was less than two seconds behind Hanover’s Rachel Smith.
Pazia Speed
Jay County – 2010
Came up with one hit Monday as the Huntington University softball team won the second game of a doubleheader 8-7 over St. Francis.
Speed finished 1-for-4 and also had three put outs. The Foresters (11-11) won the game on a walk-off single by Katie Knous.

South Adams – 2012
Led a group of four former Starfires who competed Saturday at the Little State Championships, which were contested Friday and Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan.
Huntington University’s Moore and Goshen College’s Lehman each turned in 12th-place finishes at the meet.
Moore competed in the 5,000-meter run, posting a time of 19 minutes, 26.6 seconds for the Foresters. Lehman turned in a time of 52.99 in the 400 dash for the Maple Leafs.
Allison Beitler
South Adams – 2010
Competed at the Little State Championships for the Goshen College women’s team.
Beitler ran against her former teammate in the 5,000-meter run, trailing Moore in 18th place. She finished in 21 minutes, 0.3 seconds.
Sam Heckard
South Adams – 2010
Ran for the Bethel College men at the Little State Championships.
Heckard competed in the 1,500-meter run and posted a time of 5 minutes, 11.84 seconds. He finished 33rd.
