Shreve wins heptathlon

Collegiate Check-up

Dexter Shreve built a lead with a pair of second-place finishes on the opening day of competition. He locked up his victory by winning the final event.
The 2009 Jay County High School graduate won the heptathlon for the Kent State University men’s track team as it hosted the Golden Flash Gala Friday and Saturday.
Shreve finished the heptathlon with 5,263 points to edge Cory Kunze (5,242) of Ohio State and Justin Balczak (5,239) of Lake Superior State.
The senior led after Friday’s opening four events before falling behind Kunze by 110 points on Saturday. However, he came through on the final event as he secured the heptathlon title with a first-place finish in the 1,000-meter run in 2 minutes, 43.47 seconds, while Kunze trailed 12 seconds behind in ninth place.
Shreve opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash in 7.04. He was also second in the long jump at 6.66 meters (21 feet, 10 ¼ inches).
He added fourth place finishes in the shot put (39 feet, 7 ¼ inches) and high jump (6 feet, 4 inches).

Kylie Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2012
Shared the scoring lead for the University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team in Wednesday’s 62-51 loss to Olivet.
Kahlig was the only Racer to shoot better than 50 percent from the field as she went 6-of-11 for 14 points. She also had three steals, two assists and a rebound.
The freshman totaled six points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal for Northwestern Ohio (2-9) in a 73-65 win over Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday.

Joanna Snyder
Fort Recovery – 2009
Was one of two players to score in double figures for the NCAA Division III No. 22 Ohio Northern University women’s basketball team Saturday in its 65-49 victory over John Carroll.
Snyder finished with 10 points for the Polar Bears, who improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. She also had eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Brandon Reynard
Jay County – 2009
Finished second in his individual event and helped a relay team to victory as the Indiana Tech men’s track team competed Friday and Saturday at the Oiler Opener hosted by Findlay.
Reynard was the runner-up in the 600-meter run, finishing behind Dillon Webster in 1 minute, 23.88 seconds. He joined Harris Edwards, Dareyus Person and Robert Rose for a winning time of 3:21.39 in the 4x400 relay.
The senior turned in a career-best time of 49.44 to finish second behind Person in the 400 dash on Nov. 30 at the Grand Valley State University Early Bird.

Greg Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2010
Helped the NCAA Division II No. 24 University of Findlay men’s basketball team to its 80-62 victory Saturday over Northern Michigan.
Kahlig totaled seven points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist for the Oilers (5-2). He also had four points, four rebounds and a steal in a 66-49 loss to Michigan Tech on Dec. 6.

Jordan McMillan
Jay County – 2011
Turned in a top-10 finish for the Ball State University women’s track team Friday at the Hoosier Open hosted by Indiana.
McMillan finished the 60-meter dash in 8.05 seconds for 10th place.

Eme Miller
Jay County – 2012
Placed fifth in a pair of events Saturday for the Defiance College women’s swim team, which lost 234-31 to host Findlay and 240-28 to Ohio Northern.
Miller’s first fifth-place finish came in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 10.51 seconds. She was also fifth in the 400 individual medley at 5:13.44.
The freshman added a time of 5:54.93 for sixth in the 500 freestyle.

Holly Brunswick
Fort Recovery – 2011
Played for the Ohio Dominican University women’s basketball team Saturday in its 65-38 loss to Grand Valley State.
Brunswick saw three minutes of action off the bench and recorded one steal for the Panthers (3-4). She also had one rebound Dec. 6 as ODU fell 69-56 to Ferris State.

Jason Pottkotter
Fort Recovery – 2012
Got in the game for the University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team in Saturday’s 61-57 victory over Michigan-Dearborn.
Pottkotter played five minutes for the Racers, who improved to 5-4.

Katie Simmons
Jay County – 2012
Opened her collegiate track career by contributing to a relay victory for the IPFW women’s team Dec. 1 as it hosted the Mastodon Opener.
Simmons teamed with Kayla Boyes, Julie Jeszensky and Kaylin Taylor to win the distance medley in 13 minutes, 27.37 seconds.[[In-content Ad]]
