'Skins defeat FRHS (12/28/07)
FRHS girls basketball
FORT LORAMIE, Ohio - The Indians had won four in a row.
They were within a point, on the road, with less than four minutes on the clock.
But they struggled down the stretch.
Fort Recovery High School's girls basketball team never led after falling behind 5-4 three minutes into the game, and gave up an 11-1 run to close the game in a 50-38 loss to the Fort Loramie Redskins.
Kinsey Wenning and Chelsey Leuthold made the game's first two field goals, but they represented the only lead the Indians had in the game. After FRHS (4-3) took a 4-1 lead, Loramie quickly stepped in front for good with 5:11 remaining. The Redskins' lead never surpassed six points until the final minutes, but they managed to keep control throughout.
Fort Recovery twice pulled within a single point in the fourth quarter, trailing 36-35 after a hoop from Anne Koesters with 3:55 remaining. Kelsea Otis buried a 3-pointer to extend the Redskins' lead to four, and Wenning followed with the final field goal of the game from the Indians to make it 39-37. It was all Fort Loramie (4-7) from there as Otis hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final 1:27 to seal the victory.
Otis carried the Redskins in the turnover-laden game - each team coughed up the ball 25 times - as she hit 11-of-12 from the line en route to 21 points. She also had game highs of six rebounds, five steals and three assists.
Janel Olberding added 11 points and three assists, and Lauren Turner grabbed six rebounds.
Wenning shot 5-of-7 from the field to lead the Indians with 11 points. But their late shooting struggles left them at just 29 percent shooting in the second half after hitting 41 percent in the first.
Joanna Snyder and Koesters each added eight points and five rebounds. Koesters also had five steals and three assists, and Emily May notched five steals.
In the junior varsity contest, Kendra Brunswick scored 18 points for the Indians in a 35-32 Indian loss to Fort Loramie.
Brunswick scored 10 more points than anyone else in the game, but no other Tribe player had more than four. Kara Gasson led the Redskins with eight points and six rebounds.
