As if the two player of the week awards weren’t enough, Erin Smith continued to prove she’s the league’s best player at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference meet last weekend.

Smith, a 2001 Jay County graduate and a senior on the Anderson University women’s golf team, was named the meet’s most valuable player after taking medalist honors.

She took first place with a two-day score of 168, shooting an 86 in her opening round and an 82 Sunday.

Her effort for the fifth-place Ravens all earned her all-conference honors.

Joscie Kaup

The 2003 Fort Recovery graduate racked up 25 digs as the Syracuse women’s volleyball team improved to 17-5 overall and 2-1 in the Big East with a 30-18, 30-26, 27-30, 28-30, 15-11 victory over Canisius Wednesday.

Kaup, a freshman, also had one assist in the Orange victory.

She also had 12 digs, one ace and one block Oct. 8 as Syracuse ended a three-match losing streak with a victory over Marist. She added 17 digs and one assist in a win over Seton Hall, and 13 digs in a victory over Rutgers.

Scott Steiner

The Bluffton University football team improved to 3-2 on the year with a 35-13 victory over Manchester Oct. 9 with the senior linebacker turning in another outstanding performance.

Steiner, a South Adams graduate, had more than twice as many tackles as anyone else on the team with 17. Ten of his tackles were solo tackles, and he added seven assists.

He also broke up two passes.

Libby Michael

The Anderson University senior came up with 27 digs, but the Ravens’ women’s volleyball team still took a loss against Hiram Oct. 9.

Michael, who graduated from Jay County in 2001, also had a pair of aces and one kill in the defeat.

Anderson also played Earlham Oct. 9, and Michael picked up 11 digs in a three-game Raven victory. She added 11 digs, one ace and one assist in a loss to Defiance Tuesday.

Jenni Little

The former Jay County player notched five kills in the Anderson University women’s volleyball team’s loss to Defiance. She also had three digs and one assist.

Little, who played three seasons at Jay County before graduating from Kokomo, also had four kills and one block against Hiram. She finished with three kills in the win over Earlham.

Cameron Hummel

The sophomore passed for 142 yards to support Charlie Key’s Rose-Hulman record 235-yard rushing effort, but the Engineer football team still fell 38-31 to Rhoades College in double overtime Oct. 9.

Hummel, a 2003 Jay County graduate, went 10-of-23 passing for 142 yards. He tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Gulden.

He rushed for 23 yards on eight carries as Rose-Hulman dropped to 3-3.

Sara Hough

The 2003 graduate of Jay County powered the defense as the Ancilla College women’s volleyball team scored its fourth win this season over Lake Michigan College. The victory followed the Chargers’ win in the Danville Community College Invitational last weekend.

Hough racked up about a third of Ancilla’s digs, finishing with 24.[[In-content Ad]]
