Snyder wins first college race

Collegiate Check-up

Katie Snyder’s efforts in the sprints helped lead the Jay County High School girls track team to sectional titles in each of her four seasons. She kept her success going in the opening meet of her collegiate career.
Snyder won her first race for the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s team Saturday as the Wildcats hosted the Early Bird Tune-up Invitational.
The freshman fought off a pair of teammates in the 60-meter dash, winning in a time of 8.12 seconds. Trailing her were IWU teammates Lauren Stutzman (8.15) and Michaela Mertz (8.23).
Snyder also took fifth place with a time of 27.74 in the 200 dash.

Greg Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2010
Was efficient with his shots Dec. 5 as he racked up 28 points to lead the NCAA Division II No. 15 University of Findlay men’s basketball team to an 88-78 victory over Lake Superior State.
Kahlig shot 8-of-14 from the field, 3-of-5 from long distance, while adding nine free throws for his game-high total. He also had three rebounds, one block and one steal for the Oilers (4-1).
The senior totaled nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a block Saturday in an 86-69 loss to Northwood.

Pazia Speed
Jay County – 2010
Paced the Huntington University women’s basketball team Saturday in its 77-60 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Speed shot 50 percent from the field and made three 3-pointers on the way to a 21-point effort.
She also had four steals and three rebounds for the Foresters (8-3).

Scott Schwieterman
Jay County – 2013
Led the Anderson University men’s basketball team in scoring and rebounding Wednesday in its 70-59 loss to Ohio Wesleyan.
Schwieterman tallied 14 points for the Ravens (0-9) and also grabbed seven rebounds. He added one block.
The freshman also had six points, five rebounds, one block and one assist Saturday in a 64-53 loss to Hanover.

Wade Gelhaus
Fort Recovery – 2013
Led the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team on the glass Saturday in a 65-52 loss to Tiffin.
Gelhaus came off the bench to grab a team-high eight rebounds for the Cardinals (4-2). He also had eight points, one block, one assist and one steal.

Kegan Comer
Jay County – 2013
Helped guide the NAIA No. 16 University of St. Francis men’s basketball team to a 72-63 upset win Saturday over second-ranked Indiana Wesleyan.
Comer made all of his five free throws and finished as one of three Cougars in double figures with 11 points. He also had four rebounds, three assists and a steal as USF improved to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the Crossroads League.

Erin Hunt
Jay County – 2011
Was one of four players to score in double figures for the Bethel University women’s basketball team in Saturday’s 65-59 victory over Spring Arbor.
Hunt started and hit a trio of 3-pointers as she scored 13 points. She also had three rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
The junior totaled eight points, one rebound and one assist for the Pilots (6-7) in an 87-84 overtime loss Monday to Lawrence Tech, and recorded three points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal Tuesday in a 90-76 loss to Robert Morris.

Erika Waugh
South Adams – 2011
Picked up a win for the host Knights on Saturday as they finished third out of seven women’s swim teams at the Calvin College Winter Invitational.
Waugh was uncontested in the 500 freestyle and posted a time of 5 minutes, 17.34 seconds. She added times of 2:06.64 for fourth in the 200 backstroke, 58.82 for fifth in the 100 backstroke and 2:12.31 for ninth in the 200 individual medley.
She teamed with Lexi Scott, Claire Strunk and Elizabeth Schleh to place ninth in the 800 freestyle relay in 8:04.03.

Marshall Hull
Fort Recovery – 2013
Also competed in the invitational at Calvin as the University of Findlay men’s team finished last in a seven-team field.
Hull’s top individual effort came with a time of 58.29 seconds for 16th place in the 100 backstroke.
He was also 28th in the 200 butterfly and 26th in the 100 butterfly.
He joined Jonathan Marble, Garrett Gardner and Matthew Sheehan for 26th in the 200 medley relay in 1:44.03.

Jason Pottkotter
Fort Recovery – 2011
Tallied a season-high scoring total Tuesday to help the University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team to a 117-73 victory over Ohio Mid-Western.
Pottkotter scored nine points for the Racers (7-4), who shot 56 percent from the field in the win. He also had three rebounds, two blocks and two assists.
The sophomore had one rebound and one steal Saturday in a 76-71 loss to University of Michigan–Dearborn.

Neal Fennig
Jay County – 2011
Competed for the Ball State University men’s swim team, which finished fourth Saturday at the Eastern Michigan University Invitational.
Fennig’s top individual finish came in the 200-yard freestyle as he placed 12th in 1 minute, 46.92 seconds. He was also 14th in the 100 freestyle and 15th in the 500 freestyle.
The junior joined Michael Oaks, Tanner Barton and Andy Lamb for a time of 7:07.91 for sixth place in the 800 freestyle relay.

Kylie Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2012
Helped the University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team to a 74-54 victory over University of Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday.
Kahlig shot 50 percent from the field and finished with eight points. She also had four rebounds and two assists for the Racers (6-4).

Brock McFarland
Jay County – 2013
Played for the Grace College men’s basketball team Saturday in an 81-71 loss to Goshen.
McFarland hit one field goal and finished with two points for the Lancers, who slipped to 5-4. He also had one rebound and one assist.

Megan Taylor
Jay County – 2011
Was one of three members of the Manchester University women’s cross country team to be named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Academic Team.
Students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 and be a varsity athlete in order to be eligible for the award. Taylor is a junior majoring in biochemistry.
