Soccer seniors thank fans (11/01/2008)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

The Jay County High School boys soccer team enjoyed an overwhelming amount of community support this season. We would like to thank Jay County for its tremendous display of "Patriot Pride" through yard signs, business windows and newspaper and radio advertisements.

We would also like to thank all of those who weathered the wind, the rain, the blistering heat and frigid cold to back us all season long. There are no better fans in the game. Whenever we needed that extra boost to carry us to victory, we could always look to our sidelines and the cheering fans.

From those trying to pump us up to those trying to calm us down, we always had a spectacular amount of help from the bleachers. You kept our heads in the game and our spirits high. For that, we thank our amazing "twelfth man."

Sincerely,

JCHS boys soccer seniors - Trey Dunn, Brady Mills, Derek Bartlett, David Darby, Isaac Poole, Joe Rasmussen, Aaron McLaughlin and Lance Louth

Great help

To the editor:

Pennville held its 2nd annual Fall Jubilee on Saturday, Oct. 18. This event has been advertised as a celebration of community spirit. That advertising slogan truly described what transpired on Saturday. As the chairperson for this event, I would like to say, "wow, what community spirit." I was so pleased with the events of the day. I felt that all of the hard work was worth it. I felt that people appreciated and enjoyed what our group worked so hard to pull off. As organized as we tried to be, I know there were things we could have done better. There is always next year.

The original thought behind this project was to provide a one-day event where you could bring your family, enjoy a number of free or low-cost activities, some good food, and maybe learn something about a new craft without it costing you an arm and a leg to do so.

We didn't want the event to be about making a lot of money or about people having to take time out of their busy schedules to help or enjoy the event. We were looking to get people involved, both young and old, to show what we can do by working together toward a project that benefits the whole community. We wanted it to be simple, interesting, manageable and fun. We also wanted $5 to go a long way.

Our jubilee committee consists of Marla Coleman, Elvin Newhouse and myself. I would like to thank Marla and Elvin for all the hard work, time, energy and ideas they provided to help make the event a success. Their attention to those things I overlooked allowed me to keep my sanity during the days prior to the event. Thanks also to my family for your patience and help.

We could not have pulled this event off without the help of countless people in the community and surrounding areas. Thanks to those that provided monetary donations, a name or phone number, an idea for an event, a load of straw, a gift certificate, a card table, or box of pasta. Thanks also to those who came to demonstrate their crafts, those that helped provided the food, snacks, a cash box or a craft for the kids to enjoy. Thanks to the clowns and helpers for the balloons and face painting, those taking care of the wagon rides and announcements, the musicians, those mowing and cleaning up the park, and to all of the volunteers who helped man our game booths throughout the day. Our sincere thanks to all of you.

Thanks to this large group of volunteers, the Fall Jubliee Committee will be able to make a very nice donation to the Penn-ville Endowment Fund this year. In the end, our community worked very hard toward an end result that will benefit our families in the years to come. That end result is our community and its future.

Thank you again to everyone that helped make this event the success it was.
