Solid grade card

All but one local school receives an A

The report card could hardly look better.
Jay Schools received an A this morning from the Indiana Department of Education, and nine of 10 individual schools also received A grades.
Westlawn Elementary School barely missed an A and received a B instead.
“We appealed their grade,” assistant superintendent Wood Barwick said this morning.
“We think Westlawn’s an A really,” Barwick said. “It’s (statistically) insignificant as far as we’re concerned.” The school missed an A by a fraction of a point.
The Jay report card ranks as one of the best in the state.
Barwick said Jay Schools expects to be recognized as one of the top 10 performing school districts in Indiana.
About 60 percent of the state’s public schools received grades of A or B for student progress as measured by ISTEP and End of Course Assessment tests.
The State Board of Education released the letter grades this morning after earlier grades were recalled for revision.
“This is back-to-back years,” said superintendent Tim Long, noting last year’s A grade for Jay Schools. “We’re really excited about that.”
“It’s all good news,” said an effusive Barwick.

In addition to student standardized test scores, the letter grades are based on graduation rates and college and career readiness.
Jay Schools receiving A grades were Jay County High School, West Jay Middle School, East Jay Middle School, Bloomfield Elementary School, East Elementary School, General Shanks Elementary School, Judge Haynes Elementary School, Pennville Elementary School, and Redkey Elementary School.[[In-content Ad]]
