Some 'junk' can be source of income (02/21/06)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

Let’s clean up the county? Why worry about properties outside the city limits? These people choose to be out there to be left alone. The homes you are referring to are obviously in the scrapping business for themselves.

These people go around picking up your trash and take it home to scrap out — putting money in their pockets when they choose to do it. They haul it off when they are in need of some extra cash. These people turn your trash into their cash.

Did you happen to stop and think that maybe the homeowner actually enjoys doing this in his or her spare time?

Everyone has a choice of where to live. I’m sure you live in a neighborhood that suits you. Leave those who are out to make a quick buck alone. You should try to thank those people for picking up your trash and the trash in your community. This is what we call recycling.

If these properties have what you consider junk on their properties, why is it that one of the above-mentioned properties has had a rash of thefts occuring? Obviously, there are people out in society that realize what the value of this so-called junk is worth. The police have been made aware of all of these occurances. Crime doesn’t pay.

Scrapping/recycling does pay. I have recently witnessed receipts totalling more than $1,000 for two van loads of scrap going to the scrap yards. It is a wonderful thing for these people — trash to cash. Life doesn’t get any better than that. This is simply the act of recycling. Can you imagine what the landfills would be like without recyclers?
