South Adams coach slain in Bluffton
BLUFFTON - An assistant girls basketball coach at South Adams High School died Tuesday morning after she was shot twice in the chest.
Amy White, 28, Geneva, was taken by ambulance to Bluffton Regional Medical Center, where she died. The shooting was reported about 9 a.m.
Her husband, Tyler White, 27, Bluffton, was arrested Tuesday on a preliminary charge of murder and was being held without bond.
According to Wells Circuit Court officials, he was scheduled to appear in court for an initial hearing this morning.
Amy White was also an assistant cross country coach at South Adams, and served as an assistant softball coach for the Starfires from 2002 through '04.
"Amy will be missed," Egolf said this morning in a prepared statement.
The shooting occurred at the home of Tyler White's parents at 649 East 100 South, Bluffton. According to police, he was at his parents' home when the shooting occurred, and he called 911.
Amy White's father, Mike Meyer, Berne, told police that his daughter went to the home to pick up the couple's 16½-month-old son, Maxwell.
The two had been married for about two years. They were separated, going through a divorce and were in the middle of a custody dispute, police said. They had been scheduled to attend a temporary custody hearing today in Wells Circuit Court.
An autopsy on Amy White is expected to be performed today. She has been living in Geneva with her boyfriend.
Her funeral arrangements are being handled by Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne, and details are still pending.
Amy White, a 1999 South Adams graduate, previously served as an assistant coach for the University of St. Francis (Fort Wayne) women's basketball team.
Prior to coaching at South Adams she was also an assistant at Bluffton, Carroll and Churubusco high schools.
Amy White was a graduate of St. Francis, where she studied sports management and played on the women's basketball team for two years. She previously attended Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, where she also played on the women's basketball team.[[In-content Ad]]
