Speak up to INDOT (12/15/2008)
Editorial
Don't look now but Portland's vanishing.
So is Winchester, for that matter.
At least that seems to be the case for the Indiana Department of Transportation.
The Jay County Chamber of Commerce informs us that following recent major renovations to the U.S. 27 interchange with Interstate 70 new signs at the exit no longer mention either Portland or Winchester.
That sort of oversight by INDOT is nothing new.
Not too many years ago, the exit for Ind. 67 from the Muncie bypass only mentioned Broadway, with not even a nod for Portland, Redkey, or Albany.
Maybe there's something about small towns that slips the minds of the powers that be. Or maybe it's that old Indy-centric approach to state government at work again.
Whatever it is, local voices need to speak up to help get Portland and Winchester back on the map.
That worked once before, and the signs at the Muncie bypass were corrected.
Now, the folks at the chamber of commerce are contacting the Greenfield INDOT office to get the Richmond situation fixed. They might need some other voices as well.
Sounds as if it's time to be the squeaky wheel again. - J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
