Special Olympics excited for 2014

Letters to the editor

To the editor:
Jay County Special Olympics offers bowling, basketball, horseshoes, equestrian, golf, bocce and track and field to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These activities give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Without support from the wonderful people and businesses in our community there would be no Special Olympics. If you have ever attended a Special Olympics event, you know how important Special Olympics is to these athletes.
On behalf of Jay County Special Olympics, we would like congratulate The Bogey Boys on winning the Special Olympics benefit golf tournament.  We would like to thank all the teams that played: Birdie Babes, Ami’s A Team, Portland Knights of Columbus, Hartford City Knights of Columbus, Brad Dues, Jayland ARC, Aker-Taylor, Jay County Pawnbrokers, SPTransport, Dave Fullenkamp, Baird Freeman, 1 Shot Sports, Racster, Jacks and Associates, Tony’s Tigers, Jay Hoyt, Shields Garage, Wolford Wiffers, MJS Mortuaries, Runyon’s Republicans, Jerry Funk, Clear Chiropractic, Priority Plastics, Ferrel Gas and Dylan Franks & Friends.

Thank you for sponsoring a hole.
To all the businesses that donated door prizes, you have a special place in our hearts for making our outing super special for the golfers and our athletes. We would also like to thank the Portland Knights of Columbus for hosting the event, our volunteers and The Portland Foundation.
A lot of excitement is on the way for the Jay County Special Olympics as the basketball team in 2014 prepares to represent Team Indiana in the Special Olympics USA Games to be held in Princeton, N.J., in June.  This is the second time in 30 years that Jay County Special Olympics has advanced beyond the state level
If you would like a speaker for your organization’s meeting please give us a call at 260-726-4812. Rogers Durham will share his experience of being a Special Olympic swimming coach at the World Games.
Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.
Specially yours,
Cindy Denney and
