Speed earns award
Collegiate Check-up
Back-to-back big games earned an award for a Jay County High School graduate.
Pazia Speed, JCHS class of 2010, was selected as the Huntington University Athlete of the Week after picking up her first double-double Feb. 9 and then setting her career-high in scoring three days later. She added seven points Wednesday for the women’s basketball team as it improved to 17-10 with a 64-61 victory over Spring Arbor.
Speed’s double-double came with 14 points and 10 rebounds as Huntington edged Bethel 61-60. She hit a pair of 3-pointers and also had three assists and a steal.
The freshman shot 7-of-13 Saturday and scored 20 points to lead the Foresters to an 80-56 win over Goshen. She just missed a second-straight double-double as she finished with nine rebounds, and also totaled six assists and three steals.
Speed totaled six rebounds, four assists and a steal to go along with her seven points Wednesday against Spring Arbor.
She is averaging 6.5 points per game, 3.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals.
Tyler Rigby
Jay County – 2006
Helped lead the Indiana University East men’s basketball team to a 76-52 victory Saturday over Berea College.
Rigby shot 8-of-13 from the field to finish second on the Red Wolves’ squad with 18 points. He also had six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
He ranks 23rd in the nation in scoring at 18.8 points per game, and is shooting 51 percent from the field.
Amanda Johnson
Jay County – 2008
Turned in a pair of fifth-place finishes Saturday for the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s track team at the Taylor Indoor Invitational.
Johnson’s first fifth-place effort at the meet came in the 400-meter dash, as she finished in 1 minute, 2.44 seconds. She also took fifth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4 feet, 9 inches.
Allison Beitler
South Adams – 2010
Also competed at the Taylor Indoor Invitational, picking up a fifth-place finish for the Goshen College women’s track team.
Beitler’s top finish came in the 5,000-meter run, in which she placed fifth in 20 minutes, 56.22 seconds. She was also 11th with a time of 5:52.32 in the mile run.
Greg Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2010
Powered the NCAA Division II No. 3 University of Findlay men’s basketball team Feb. 10 in an 83-67 victory over Tiffin.
Kahlig was on fire, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the field including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. He scored 18 points, and also finished with four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
The freshman added four points, three rebounds and a steal for the Oilers (21-1) in a 64-58 win over Ohio Dominican Saturday.
Dexter Shreve
Jay County – 2009
Competed for the Kent State University men’s track team Feb. 11 and 12 at the Akron Invitational.
Shreve’s best effort came in the high jump, in which he turned in a leap of 6 feet, ¾ inches to tie for six place with Youngstown State’s Brian Ehrhardt. He added a 15th-place finish with a time of 8.51 in the 60-meter hurdles.
Daniel Bollenbacher
South Adams – 2008
Picked up his first win for the Lincoln Memorial University basketball team Tuesday as the Railsplitters defeated Alabama-Huntsville 9-8.
Bollenbacher entered a tie game in the top of the sixth inning and tossed two scoreless innings of relief. He gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out three batters, and Lincoln Memorial came up with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
He also struck out one batter in one perfect inning of relief in the first game of the double-header against Alabama-Huntsville earlier in the day, and had a strikeout in another perfect inning of relief Sunday in an 11-7 loss to Limestone.
Joanna Snyder
Fort Recovery – 2009
Finished with eight points Saturday in the Ohio Northern University women’s basketball team’s 79-69 loss to Mount Union.
Snyder hit a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds for the Polar Bears. She also had three assists.
Brandon Reynard
Jay County – 2009
Helped the Indiana Institute of Technology men’s track team to a ninth-place relay finish Saturday at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet.
Reynard joined Zach Chapman, Jonathan Tims and Billy Henderson for a time of 3 minutes, 19.18 seconds in the 4x400-meter relay to take ninth. He was also 26th in the 400 dash in 49.79.[[In-content Ad]]
