Speed powers Foresters
Collegiate Check-up
The Foresters weren’t at their best in the first half Saturday. But Pazia Speed kept them in the game.
Speed, a 2010 Jay County High School graduate, scored 14 of her season-high 30 points in the first half while the rest of her team shot just 4-of-27 from the field. Her effort allowed the Huntington University women’s basketball team to stay close enough to rally from a double-digit deficit to knock off Grace 76-74 in double overtime.
Speed shot 12-of-14 from the free-throw line and 9-of-18 from the field to lead the Foresters (14-6). She added six rebounds, four assists and one steal.
She also shot 50 percent from the field Wednesday in Huntington’s 85-77 overtime loss to top-ranked St. Francis.
Speed ranks in the top 20 in the county in NAIA’s Division II in points (17th - 369), free-throw percentage (17th - .850) and points per game (20th – 18.5). She is also averaging 3.7 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game.
Kegan Comer
Jay County – 2013
Was the top scorer Tuesday for the NAIA Division II No. 8 University of St. Francis men’s basketball team in its 72-60 loss to 20th-ranked Huntington.
Comer hit three 3-pointers as he racked up 22 points. He added a game-high five assists, three rebounds, two steals and a block.
The freshman also had four points, one rebound and one block in Saturday’s 71-66 win over Marian.
Greg Kahlig
FRHS – 2010
Powered the University of Findlay men’s basketball team Jan. 16 to an 87-62 victory over Ohio Dominican.
Kahlig shot 8-of-15 from the field and 7-of-15 from the line to score 25 points for the Oilers (11-3). He also had four assists, two rebounds and a steal.
The senior finished with 12 points, six rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal in Saturday’s 66-48 victory over Tiffin.
Hannah Moore
SAHS – 2012
Earned one of three victories Friday for the Huntington University women’s track team, which opened its season at the Trine University Open.
Moore picked up her win in the 3,000 meters. She posted a time of 11 minutes, 50.48 seconds.
Erika Waugh
SAHS – 2011
Earned one victory for the Calvin College women’s swim team in its 193-105 win Saturday over Kalamazoo.
Waugh took the top spot in the 200-yard backstroke by more than a second with a time of 2 minutes, 12.95 seconds. She was also third in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.24 and the 1,000 freestyle in 11:09.55.
She joined Megan Schroder, Alayna Gallegos and Nicole Karl for a third-place time of 1:57.22 in the 200 medley relay.
Scott Schwieterman
JCHS – 2013
Has posted double-digit points in five of his last six games, including each of the last two, for the Anderson University men’s basketball team.
Schwieterman was the only Anderson player to reach double figures Monday as the Ravens (3-13) fell 90-67 to Mount St. Joseph. He added four rebounds.
The freshman had 12 points, two rebounds and an assist in Saturday’s 73-62 loss to Earlham.
Erin Hunt
JCHS – 2011
Scored in double figures Saturday for the Bethel College women’s basketball team in its 81-75 loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Hunt buried four 3-pointers as she finished third on the team in scoring with 12 points. She added three steals, two assists and a rebound for the Pilots (8-13).
The junior finished with four points, two rebounds and a steal in Wednesday’s win over Taylor.
Kylie Kahlig
FRHS – 2012
Led the University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team in scoring Jan. 18 as it fell 69-55 to Siena Heights.
Kahlig scored nine points off the bench to match teammate Lauren Hopfner with nine points. She also grabbed four rebounds.
The sophomore started in Saturday’s 67-48 loss to Davenport, tallying three points, three assists and three rebounds for the Racers (10-10).
Wade Gelhaus
FRHS – 2013
Finished second on the team in rebounds Saturday in the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team’s 68-61 loss to Wayne State.
Gelhaus started and grabbed four boards for the Cardinals, who slipped to 5-9 on the year. He also had five points, two assists, one steal and one block.
The freshman finished with four points and two rebounds in a 77-69 loss Jan. 16 to Lake Superior State.
Neal Fennig
JCHS – 2011
Picked up a runner-up finish Saturday in the Ball State University men’s swim team’s 148-75 win over Eastern Illinois.
Fennig’s top effort came in the 200-yard freestyle as he finished second behind senior teammate Michael Oaks in 1 minute, 46.92 seconds. He also posted a time of 5:02.14 for fourth in the 500 freestyle.
