Speed scores 22 in Huntington win

Pazia Speed paced the NAIA Division II No. 20 Huntington University women’s basketball team in scoring Saturday as it defeated Grace College 57-39.
The 2010 Jay County High School graduate made all three of her 3-point attempts and poured in a game-high 22 points. She added four rebounds, two steals and two assists for the Foresters (21-7).
Speed, a senior, totaled 16 points, five rebounds and two assists Wednesday as HU fell 62-53 to top-ranked St. Francis.

Alli Beitler
SAHS – 2010
Competed for the Goshen College women’s track team Saturday at the Defiance College Open.
Beitler finished as the runner-up in the 3,000-meter run in 11 minutes, 38.35 seconds. She was also fifth with a time of 5:41.68 in the mile run.

Tim Lehman
SAHS – 2012
Also earned a second-place finish for Goshen at the Defiance Open.
Lehman posted a time of 53.24 in the men’s 400-meter dash to finish as the runner-up.
He teamed with Lucas Harnish, Luke Graber and Vinicius Campos to win the 4x400 relay in three minutes, 33.33 seconds.

Kegan Comer
JCHS - 2013
Came off the bench to lead the NAIA Division II No. 19 University of St. Francis men’s basketball team to a 62-60 win Tuesday over 12th-ranked Huntington.
Comer finished with 18 points in the game in which senior teammate Scott Kohne hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer that was later featured as the No. 1 play on ESPN’s SportsCenter. The freshman shot 7-of-10 from the field and also had three rebounds, two steals and two assists.
He totaled 12 points, four rebounds and a block in Saturday’s 77-64 victory for the Cougars (20-9) over Marian.

Megan Taylor
JCHS – 2011
Helped the Manchester University women’s track team to a fifth-place finish at the 10-team Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Defiance.
Taylor teamed with Sarah Stahl, Anna McGowen and Brittany Shuler to place second in the distance medley in 13 minutes, 42.08 seconds.
She joined Kelsie Thomas, Stahl and McGowen for a fifth-place time of 4:30.51 in the 4x400 relay.
The junior also placed 14th in the 400 dash in 1:09.2.

Kylie Kahlig
FRHS – 2012
Scored in double figures Saturday as the University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team rolled to an 88-58 win over Marygrove.
Kahlig shot 5-of-7 from the field and hit a pair of 3-pointers as she finished with 14 points for the Racers (16-13). She added four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
She had eight points, eight rebounds and an assist in Wednesday’s 82-71 double-overtime win over Concordia.

Eme Miller
JCHS – 2012
Ran for the Defiance College women’s track team at the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Otterbein.
Miller finished fifth in the 3,000-meter run. She had a time of 10 minutes, 34.74 seconds.

Erin Hunt
JCHS – 2011
Led the Bethel College women’s basketball team in rebounds Saturday as it topped Mount Vernon Nazarene 61-55.
Hunt grabbed seven boards to match fellow Pilot Lauren Tanner for the team high of seven. She also had two points and two assists.
She finished with three points, three assists, one steal and one rebound Wednesday for Bethel (12-17) in a 60-54 loss to Taylor.

Tyler Back
JCHS – 2013
Competed for the Grace College men’s track team Feb 14 at the Trine Invitational.
Back launched the shot put 41 feet, 10 3/4 inches to finish in sixth place. He had a distance of 41 feet, 3 1/4 inches for ninth place in the weight throw.

Wade Gelhaus
FRHS – 2013
Started for the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team Saturday in its 68-53 loss to Michigan Tech.
Gelhaus totaled six points, two rebounds, one assist and one block for the Cardinals (9-13). He had five rebounds, four points and an assist Feb. 13 as SVSU defeated Northern Michigan 61-50.

Marshall Hull
FRHS – 2013
Competed for the University of Findlay men’s swim team, which finished last Saturday in the seven-team Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships in Geneva, Ohio.
Hull competed in the 200-yard backstroke for the Oilers, finishing in a time of 2 minutes, 7.21 seconds. He was 18th overall.

Jason Pottkotter
FRHS – 2012
Helped the University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team to a 103-74 victory Saturday over Marygrove.
Pottkotter made his lone 3-point attempt and finished with seven points. He added one rebound, one steal and one assist for the Racers (20-7).[[In-content Ad]]
