The Huntington University women’s basketball team won its season opener with a former Patriot leading the way.
Pazia Speed, a 2010 graduate of Jay County High School, racked up 28 points to power the Foresters to an 85-63 victory at home Saturday over Northwestern Ohio.
Speed was on fire, shooting 9-of-14 from the field and hitting three 3-pointers en route to her career-high scoring total. She also hit all of her seven free-throw attempts.
She added two assists, two rebounds and a steal in 29 minutes of play.
The sophomore also had seven points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal Wednesday as Huntington improved to 2-0 with a 69-60 win over Aquinas.
Amanda Johnson
Jay County – 2008
Helped the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s cross country team to its 12th Mid-Central Conference title in the last 14 years.
Johnson was the team’s No. 5 runner across the finish line Saturday at Goshen, capping the Wildcats’ winning score at 43 points. She placed 14th overall with a time of 19 minutes, 7.5 seconds to earn all-conference honors.
Allison Beitler
South Adams – 2010
Also competed at the Mid-Central Conference Championships for the Goshen College women’s cross country team.
Beitler turned in the No. 5 time for her team, which placed eighth, and was 40th overall. She finished the 5K race in 21 minutes, 28.3 seconds.
Frank Thien
Fort Recovery – 2009
Caught his third touchdown pass of the season Saturday in the Ohio Northern University football team’s 51-15 slaughter of host Wilmington.
Thien’s scoring reception came on a 7-yard pass from Tyler Rue with 3:56 left in the second quarter, extending the Polar Bears’ lead to 21-8. He finished the game with a team-high four receptions for 75 yards, including a 47-yard catch in the first quarter.
Nick Teeter
South Adams – 2010
Helped the Huntington University men’s basketball team to a 71-52 victory Thursday over Ohio State - Newark.
Teeter hit a 3-pointer and finished with seven points to go along with three assists. He also had six points, four assists, two rebounds and a steal in the Foresters’ season-opening win Saturday over Berea.
Cori Vormohr
Jay County – 2009
Competed for the Ball State University women’s swim team Saturday in its 155-145 victory over Akron.
Vormohr’s best effort came in the 200-yard breaststroke, in which she finished fourth in 2 minutes, 29.03 seconds. She was also sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.39.
The junior teamed with Elaine Pitsas, Katie Saulman and Mallory Miles for a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:53.48, and joined Leighann Mattson, Cheyanne Jackson and Saulman for a sixth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:49.28.
Erin Hunt
Jay County – 2011
Scored her first collegiate point Saturday in the Bethel College women’s basketball team’s 70-55 victory over Mount Marty College.
Hunt played less than a minute in the game, but got to the free-throw line and hit her only attempt. She also played three minutes in Bethel’s 70-50 win Tuesday over IU-South Bend.

Led the University of Findlay men’s basketball team in scoring Saturday in an 87-66 exhibition loss to Dayton.
Kahlig finished 5-of-10 from the field and 8-of-11 from the foul line for 19 points. He also had three rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block.[[In-content Ad]]
