Spoiled by Colts' amazing run
Editorial
Admit it, Colts fans, we are spoiled.
Sunday's win doesn't amount to a hill of beans when compared to issues of war and peace, health care reform, and environmental policy that are usually hashed out on this page.
But for most Hoosiers, it was still something special.
With 21 consecutive regular season wins, the Colts have tied an NFL record. And from the looks of the rest of the season, more wins lie ahead.
So it's understandable if, under the circumstances, fans of the Chicago Bears or the Cleveland Browns or even the resurgent Cincinnati Bengals might be a tad irritated by the Colts' winning ways.
To them, we'd suggest a look back in NFL history about 15 years or so.
Colts fans suffered through a long, long dry spell after the team came to Indianapolis from Baltimore. That was the era when the punter was the most valuable player. That was the era when "Lord, help our Colts" was a mainstay on Indy radio. That was an era when - though few like to admit it - discouraged Colts fans found themselves shifting allegiance to the Bears or the Bengals or even the Browns.
In other words, these things are cyclical. The Colts are on a long, wonderful ride. And their fans will cheerfully admit we are spoiled.
We know it will not last forever. As far as we know, Peyton Manning is not immortal.
But for now - and for the foreseeable future - they are winners.
More than that, they make us proud - as fans, as a state - by the manner in which they have become winners.
While the ride continues, we're going to relish every minute of it. - J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
