Sports groups lobby SA board (3/10/04)

Groups contend they've been shut out of SA gyms

BERNE — If you want winning athletic programs, you have to provide time for kids to practice.

That was the message delivered by parents to the South Adams School Board Tuesday night.

“We don’t have adequate gym time,” said Roger Teeter, Geneva, who is involved in an elementary school level AAU basketball program.

Representatives of basketball, wrestling, and football “feeder” programs complained to the board that the policies of South Adams athletic director Steve Rhoades are not supportive of their efforts.

“We want to build a program of individual and team winning attitudes,” Jeff Sprunger, rural Berne, told the board. “It’s a positive thing for the school corporation.” Sprunger is involved in the Gold Wrestling Club, which has 67 elementary age participants.

Though board members did not respond directly to the parental complaints, South Adams Junior-Senior High School principal Brent Lehman said he has spoken to the athletic director and coaches and that guidelines on gym use are being developed for the next school year in hopes of avoiding conflicts.

To some of those on hand, deferring a solution to next year wasn’t good enough.

Teeter said the AAU basketball program has had to rent gym space because it was denied access to South Adams gyms, even though the gyms were idle.

“We’re already paying for these places,” said Sprunger. “Why not use them?”

In other business:

•The board agreed to hire Industrial Insulation and Roofing, Fort Wayne, to apply protective coating to the membrane roof of the Stardome at the high school. The cost, which was the low quote for the job, will be $13,400. School corporation employees will do the work on flat portions of the high school roof.

•Board member Dennis Affolder floated the idea of naming the auditorium at the junior-senior high school in honor of the late Dr. Freeman Burkhalter, who died five years ago. A longtime music teacher and choral director, Dr. Burkhalter worked with both school and church groups in Adams County.

“He devoted his whole life to music,” said Affolder. He suggested board members discuss the idea with others in the community to get a sense of whether there is interest in naming the auditorium after Burkhalter.

•Two requests by coaches to attend conferences were approved. Doug Beall will attend the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association clinic in Indianapolis April 16 and 17. Kirk Sorg will attend the Notre Dame football clinic in South Bend on March 16 and 17.

•Clint Anderson and Rod Moser were hired as assistant track coaches for the high school.

•Board members were told that the mathematics textbook adoption committee has been at work and would be bringing a recommendation to the board on April 13.[[In-content Ad]]
