Sports park a great idea (10/5/04)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

Recently I was told that the sports park, the brainchild of Glynn Barber, was going from a dream to a reality.

Exited, of course, every race track I went to people were asking what I knew. All I could say was it was voted that building was going to start.

Unfortunately I heard there were a few bad apples in the community that didn’t want the sports park to exist. Well, if it were something you wanted to see start up it would be thumbs-up. The idea of this sports park to me is a good idea. I’m all for the race track, which in my opinion should be a quarter mile, but everyone knows it only takes one bad apple to ruin everything.

Many people in town want to see this transpire and if I were the one complaining (which I understand is very few) I’d reconsider what this can do for our community.

I can assure you that this will help our young people have yet another place to go, and where else close do you have a motocross track or a decent race track other than Eldora or Gas City?

Some people want to enjoy our community for what it has and can do. If we do this we will have Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon and other drivers at this race track.

Now for the folks that are not interested in having the sports park you need to also speak out against the new Wal-Mart and Lowe’s stores. You want to see our community grow and bring in business. It all adds up: Sports park plus hotel plus new Wal-Mart means the money stays in Jay County. I am also certain that some revenue from this will go to charity, so please don’t judge a book by its cover. Look at the whole circle of opportunity.

Sincerely,

Joel Smitley
