St. Henry stops Indians in OT (01/10/04)
FRHS boys basketball
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery and St. Henrys basketball squads had similar games shooting the basketball Friday night — a dismal first half boosted by a sharp-shooting second half — but the contest was decided in overtime, where the Indians fell 55-51.
While the first two periods were highlighted by miserable shooting performances on behalf of both teams, a high-scoring second half left the game knotted at 46-46 at the end of regulation. The Redskins finally put the Indians away in overtime, where they hit a pair of field goals and knocked down 5-of-6 free throws to seal the victory.
St. Henry was led by Ross Niekamp, who scored 20 points on the night on 8-for-12 shooting from the field, including 3-for-5 beyond the 3-point arc.
The teams shot a combined 12-for-42 (28 percent) in the first half, and could only manage to score seven points between them in the second period. Only trailing 16-12 at the half, the Indians fought back after the intermission to push the game into an extra period.
The Indians’ Dusty Tobe and John Bihn were the leading scorers, with 11 and 12 points respectively. Bihn also pulled down nine boards and dished out a team-high five assists. Tobe hit three of his five 3-point attempts.
The Redskins were hot for the entire second half, where they knocked down 12 of their 19 field goal attempts.
Steve Sutter was nearly perfect on the night for St. Henry, shooting 4-for-4 from the field and 6-for-9 from the free throw line. He also led the team with six boards.
Junior varsity
The Indians’ junior varsity kept pace with St. Henry for the bulk of the contest Friday night, but fell flat in the fourth quarter en route to a 55-42 defeat.
Fort Recovery entered the fourth quarter only trailing 39-37, but the Redskins stayed hot and outpaced the Indians, who were outscored 16-5 in the final period.
