DELPHOS, Ohio - The Indians made it a battle for second place in the Midwest Athletic Conference. They just couldn't quite keep up with their state-ranked foe.
Fort Recovery was tied with the Division IV No. 7 St. John's Blue Jays at halftime, but fell behind by double digits in the second half on the way to a 50-44 defeat.
The win put St. John's (15-2) in second place in the MAC with a record of 6-1. The Indians are 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference while Division III No. 1 Versailles leads MAC with a perfect mark.
The teams were deadlocked at 23 at the half, but St. John's opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run to take control. The home team pushed ahead by as many as 11 points before Fort Recovery pulled back to within 44-40 when Anne Koesters split a pair of free throws with 2:24 remaining. However, the Indians never got closer than four points as they suffered their second conference loss.
Sarah Clark and Zefiryn Bryan paced the Blue Jays with 18 and 17 points respectively. They shot a combined 10-of-18 (56 percent) and buried 11 free throws.
Clark grabbed 10 rebounds, and Bryan followed with six. Victoria Recker, who hit a 3-pointer during the key St. John's run, had four assists and three steals.
Joanna Snyder had 19 points and Koesters added 13 for the Indians, but the shot a combined 11-of-37 (30 percent). FRHS shot just 31 percent overall, including 6-of-29 (21 percent) in the second half.
Koesters finished with 12 rebounds and three steals, and Snyder had seven assists and six boards.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery managed just one first-half field goal as it fell 36-23 to the Blue Jays.
The Indians' only field goal of the first half was a Kendra Brunswick 3-pointer as they trailed 12-4 at the intermission. They shot 1-of-23 (4 percent) from the field in the opening two quarters, and finished at 15 percent for the game.
Brunswick finished with seven points for the Indians. Olivia Thien had seven rebounds, and Alyssa Brackman came up with seven steals.
April Grothouse totaled 10 points and four steals to lead the victory for St. John's. Kristina Desenberg and Katie Dundert each had five points.[[In-content Ad]]
