Starfires seek to build off of streak
SAHS baseball
A midseason slump last season left the Starfires below .500 with a 9-10 record in early May. They didn’t lose again until the sectional championship game.
Coach Brad Buckingham is looking his South Adams High School baseball team to continue to build off of their late-season run in an effort to win 20 games again and have a chance at their first sectional title in more than a decade.
Corey Seffernick returns to lead the effort after turning in one of the best seasons in school history as a junior. The catcher hit .475, the third-best batting average in school history, with team highs of 42 runs, 14 doubles and 26 walks.
He was named to the All-Allen County Athletic Conference first team, and is also the team’s returning leader with 38 hits.
“He’s a really smart hitter, draws a lot of walks. He’s going to get walked a lot. He understands how to hit the ball to all fields. He’s probably our best all-around hitter.”
Collin Affolder will return to shortstop after driving in a team-high 37 runs last season, with Chandler Ingle at second base, Eric Pimentel at third and Blake Fox at first. Jared Rife will also fill in at catcher and first base.
Shea Pyle, a senior, will play one of the outfield positions, but the other two are still up in the air.
Alex Augsberger will take the lead role on the mound after sharing the team-high in wins with 2012 graduates Dustin Wanner and Nick Batt with a 6-3 record last season. He posted a team-best 2.88 ERA while striking out 38 batters in 48 2/3 innings.
“Augsberger has the most experience on our staff,” said Buckingham, who will also get major innings from Affolder, Fox and Pimentel. “He’s been pitching a little bit since he was a freshman.
“The tough task for him is that he’ll be making a lot of big starts this year. … He’s got good stuff.”
After hanging around the .500 mark for the first two-thirds of the season in 2012, the Starfires racked up nine straight victories to end the regular season. They knocked off Adams Central and Churubusco in the sectional tournament to reach the 20-win mark before falling 6-3 to host Bishop Luers in the sectional championship game.
The last sectional crown for South Adams came in 2002.
“We want to win a sectional title, especially since we were knocking at the doorstep last year, playing in the championship game,” said Buckingham. “A typical goal is to win 20 games. ... Those kind of expectations for this team, I feel like, are valid.”[[In-content Ad]]
