Stars' Moore scores 1st goal

Collegiate Check-up

Maddie Moore recorded her first assist in the first game of her collegiate career. Now she has a goal to go along with it.

The 2009 South Adams High School graduate tallied her goal for the Bluffton University women's soccer team Sept. 12 in a 4-2 victory over Huntington.

The Beavers (3-2) had a 1-0 lead when Moore broke through for her score 28:36 into the game to push the advantage to two. Her goal came on an assist from Meghan Forquer.

Moore, who totaled two shots on goal, added her second assist of the year with about 10 minutes to play. She passed to Kourtney Lewis, who scored for the second time in just over two minutes to push the Bluffton advantage to 4-1.

Alyssa Johnson

Jay County - 2006

Finished sixth for the Taylor University women's cross country team to lead the Trojans to a third-place finish Sept. 12 at the IPFW Invitational.

Johnson, who finished fifth in the nation in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics 1,500-meter run in May, had the best time on her team by nearly 30 seconds. She finished in 19 minutes, 52 seconds, which was six seconds behind fifth-place runner Brittney McDuffee of IUPUI.

Becca Selner of the host Mastodons won in 18:50.

Tiff Gaerke

Fort Recovery - 2007

Turned in big matches offensively and defensively in helping the University of Dayton volleyball team to victory Sept. 11 and 12 as it hosted the Dayton Flyer Classic.

Gaerke tied for the team lead in the opening match of the tournament, a 25-22, 25-16, 25-16 win over Connecticut, and led the way in kills as the Flyers rallied past Creighton 21-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-5 in the finale. She did a little bit of everything against Creighton, finishing with 10 kills, three aces, two assists and two blocks to go along with her 21 digs.

The junior matched teammate Lindsay Fletemier, a 2008 All American, with 13 kills in the victory over UConn, and added seven digs, two aces, one assist and one block. She totaled nine kills, eight digs, two blocks and one assist in Dayton's win over Samford.

The Flyers are 9-0.

Adam Gray

Jay County - 2009

Tied for 57th Tuesday as the Valparaiso University men's golf team placed 10th out of 12 teams at the BGSU John Piper Intecollegiate.

Gray shot matching scores of 77 in his first two rounds at the tournament hosted by Bowling Green State University at Stone Ridge Golf Club. He added an 83 in his final round for a total of 237 in the 54-hole event.

Joseph Vormohr

Jay County - 2006

Anchored the offensive line for the Hanover College football team Sept. 12 as it totaled more than 400 yards of offense in a 49-21 loss to Waynesburg.

Vormohr started at center for the Panthers, who picked up 423 total yards, including 317 through the air.[[In-content Ad]]
