State art exhibits are worth the trip (11/04/05)

Letters to the editor

To the editor:

As the holidays are quickly approaching, you may be looking for some exciting events to share with your family.

People of my generation, retired and a little younger, may remember enjoying the covers of The Saturday Evening Post which were so artfully illustrated by Norman Rockwell.

There is an extensive exhibit of his work at the Indiana Children’s Museum in Indianapolis which will last until Jan. 16.

The exhibit includes 100 original covers, 20 theatrical environments and 35 three-dimensional, life-size depictions of Rockwell’s most beloved characters.

One cover was painted of a farm family who lived in the Powers Station area of Jay County (a copy of the cover hangs in the rotunda of the Jay County Courthouse).

Look for a family gazing at a black and white cow in front of a barn.

Another exceptional exhibit features The Lord of the Rings at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis.

This exhibit will be on view through Jan. 3.

You will be able to see original costumes, hand-crafted weapons, suits of armor, movie sets, and videos explaining how many of the special effects of these magnificent movies were accomplished.

You will come away from these exhibits with a sense of wonder at the creative genius of our fellow human beings.

We are extremely fortunate to have these exhibits in Indiana.

Not zombies

To the editor:

Sports editor Ray Cooney: The Jay County Patriots football team played their hearts out to win. I don’t appreciate you calling our football team and kids zombies. After all, they are a good team and they are very much alive.
